SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 5 main tasks is to explain meaning. We call this the Rashi rule of WORD MEANING. Rashi had 10 vehicles to explain meaning. Rashi would frequently show how different grammatical modes correspond to different nuances of the same word. We call this the Rashi subrule of ROOT+PREPOSITION. EXAMPLE Ex32-12a ---------------- The Hebrew root Nun-Cheth-Mem means - COMFORT in the intense mode - REGRET in the passive mode Both COMFORT (e.g. on the death of a loved one) and REGRET (e.g. on a sin like murder) involve PUTTING A THOUGHT OUT OF ONES MIND. - To COMFORT somebody is to actively make him forget the thought (e.g.the death of a loved one) that is bothering the person - TO REGRET is too passively let other thoughts, alternative methods, overtake your focus so that you retract from your original approach | ||
