N-Ch-L has 4 MEANINGS

RASHIS COVERED: Ex34-09b Lv25-46a N-Ch-L has 4 meanings
Nu34-17a Nu34-18a
Nu34-29a

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
It is well known that Hebrew is based on 3 letter roots which
can be conjugated in a variety of modes. Very often each mode
is associated with a distinct meaning. The Hebrew root
Nun-Chet-Lamed means to inherit. It has 4 meanings
-- in the ACTIVE mode it means to INHERIT
-- in the INTENSIVE mode it means TO GIVE INHERITANCE TO CHILDREN
-- in the INTERACTIVE mode it means to develop ESTATE ASSETS

---------------------------------------------------
TODAYS RASHI RULE: GRAMMAR
TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE: ROOT CONJUGATION
---------------------------------------------------

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE RULE and SUBRULE
-----------------------------------------
One of Rashis goals was to give the rules of grammar
the same way modern texts give grammar rules. The
most famous example of Hebrew grammar are the rules
governing conjugation of roots. Rashi frequently
assigns distinct meanings to distinct root modes.

TODAYS EXAMPLE
--------------
Here is the list of verses with various modes of N-Ch-L
and their distinct meanings.
VERSE MODE(Binyan) Translation of verse(NCL translation CAPED)
Nu34-17a Active*1 The Tribe heads will INHERIT tribe portions
Nu34-18a Active*1 The Tribe heads will INHERIT tribe portions
Nu34-29a Intensive*1 Tribe heads will DiSTRIBUTE the portions
Ex34-09b Active*2 God forgive us and INHERIT US
Lv25-46a Interactiv*3 You will develop your servants for children
COMMENTS
*1 In other words
-- First each tribe head inherited his tribes ENTIRE portion
-- Then, the tribe head divided up this portion among his tribe

The inheritance by the tribe head uses the ACTIVE tense
The inheritance by the tribe itself uses the INTENSIVE tense
since the tribe head divides it up

*2 Fascinating is the difference in approach between Rashi and
Radack on this enigmatic verse. The simple meaning of the
verse is agreed by Rashi and Radack
   --------------------------------------------------------
   God please forgive us for the sin of the Golden calf;
Please (show us your love) by making us your inheritance
   --------------------------------------------------------

For further details and for the Rashi-Radack controversy
please see the footnotes in the main posting at
   http://www.RashiYomi.com/h14n16.htm

*3 We translate the HITPAEL as INTERACTIVE MODE. (The usual
translation is REFLEXIVE). Rashi explains that the
   interactive mode of INHERIT means

You will work and develop your servants
So that you may leave to your children good
    resources

Thus the inheritance is interactive--on the one hand you
work on it; on the other hand you inherit it to them
