RASHIS COVERED: Dt01-04a Dt01-04b Dt01-04c VERY BRIEF SUMMARY ------------------ Dt01-01:03 states roughly as follows --- Moses spoke to the Jews --- AFTER --- He had won the two wars with Sichon and Og The style issue is how to clarify the connection of these 2 consecutive sentences. In the reference below we have presented 4 methods of connection. In this case the connection reason is one of SUPPORT & ENABLEMENT. Moses did the Jews a favor in conquering these 2 kings--hence the Jews should listen to him The wars were difficult wars with powerful kings and nations REFERENCE --------- http://www.RashiYomi.com/cp-9.htm This reference summarizes the Consecutive Parshah series in which we present 4 methods of connecting sentences and paragraphs. In this case we deal with a connection of SUPPORT and ENABLEMENT. BECAUSE Moses conquered two harsh kings, THEREFORE the Jews owe him a favor and should listen to him Other examples of enablement are presented in this reference. Rashi, besides using the STYLE RULE of SENTENCE CONNECTION also uses the method of ALIGNMENT. TODAYS LIST ----------- There are only 5 verses in the Torah where SICHON and OG are mentioned. These 5 verses are ALIGNED in the list below. As can be seen, there are different types of emphasis. Dt01-04 is the only verse where BOTH the Kings names AND their CAPITAL cities are mentioned. Some other verses by contrast are terse-- they simply talk about THE TWO EMORITE KINGS. The Rashi rule used here is ALIGNMENT. In this email list we do not argue that every word in the Torah has some special meaning. Indeed, many Torah words follow rules of human style. BUT if the Torah repeats the same phrase and makes minor differences then we do have the right to regard these differences as significant. REFERENCE --------- The alignment series may be found at http://www.RashiYomi.com/align-58.htm ALIGNMENT + CONSECUTIVE SENTENCES --------------------------------- In this case Dt01-04 EMPHASIZES BOTH THE KINGS and THEIR CITIES. It is as if the Torah went out of its way to tell us that BOTH the kings and cities were famous for their power. This idea fits in with the first idea that Moses was emphasizing that he had done the Jews a favor and therefore he should be listened to. In summary: The theme in Dt01-03:04 is that SINCE Moses had done favors to the Jews he should THEREFORE be listened to. To enhance this argument Moses emphasized that he had conquered POWERFUL EMorite kings who lived in POWERFUL cities. Here is the list | ||||

*1 The full text is ----------------------------------------------------- God said dont fear them for I will give them over to you THE SAME WAY I GAVE OVER TO YOU SICHON AND OG, THE EMORITE KINGS ------------------------------------------------------ This verse by itself emphasizes the POWER of the EMORITE Kings. When this verse is contrasted with Dt01-04 we see an emphasis on both the KINGS and their CITIES. |
