RASHIS COVERED: Lv26-08a Lv26-15a Lv26-15b Lv26-17j
Lv26-17b Dt32-04a
Lv26-08a

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis 10 main methods is the GRAMMAR method where Rashi
explains GRAMMAR the same way GRAMMAR books do. A major
submethod of the GRAMMAR method is explain sentence order.
Most sentences use a VERB-OBJECT-INDIRECT-OBJECT order.
The following simple sentence illustrates this
-----------------------------------------------------------
I brought the wine to the table
SUBJECT VERB OBJECT INDIRECT OBJECT
-----------------------------------------------------------

Deviation from this basic order indicates emphasis; you
place a word earlier in the sentence to bring attention
and focus on it in order to emphasize it.

In such a case the sentence
- retains its simple meaning
- and ALSO indicates the emphasis indicated by the
reordering of the words
This is a peach of a Rashi since it illustrates
a basic idea about exegetical vs. simple meaning.

EXAMPLE Lv26-08a
----------------
The biblical phrase
----------------------------------
FROM AMONG YOU: 5 will pursue 100
----------------------------------

vs

----------------------------------
5 FROM AMONG YOU will pursue 100
----------------------------------

emphasizes the FROM AMONG YOU. Hence Rashi comments

-----------------------------------
Even 5 weaklings will pursue 100
-----------------------------------

EXAMPLE Lv26-17b Lv26-17j
-------------------------
The biblical phrase
---------------------------------
The haters IN YOU will rule
---------------------------------

vs

---------------------------
The haters will rule IN YOU
---------------------------

emphasizes the IN YOU. Rashi comments

---------------------------------------------
You will be ruled over by Jewish Anti-semites
---------------------------------------------

EXAMPLE Dt32-04
---------------
The biblical phrase
---------------------------------
Strong God, PERFECT are His ways
--------------------------------

vs

--------------------------------
Strong God: His ways are PERFECT
--------------------------------

emphasizes PERFECT. Hence Rashi comments
----------------------------------------
Despite His strength (no one can stand
up to him) God is always Just in His
ways and does not abuse His Power.

EXAMPLE Lv26-15a Lv26-15b
--------------------------
The Biblical phrases
------------------------------
If my STATUTES are despised
If my ORDINANCES are loathed
------------------------------

vs

----------------------------
If you despise my STATUTES
If you loathe my ORDINANCES
----------------------------

emphasizes STATUTES and ORDINANCES
Hence Rashi comments
---------------------------------
If you despise STATUTORY religious law
If you despise Jewish COURTS (which
enforce ordinances)
---------------------------------

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
---------------
The sentence order rule was powerfully
advocated by the great modern commentator
Malbim who skillfully used it in his
commentary to defend many difficult
midrashim.

A list of verses with deviant Grammatical order(=emphasis)
VERSE Biblical Text*10 Point of Emphasis
Lv26-08a FROM YOU:5 pursue 100 Even 5 weaklings pursue 100
Lv26-15a ORDINANCES loathe Redicule judicial system
Lv26-15b STATUTES despise Religious statutory law
Lv26-17j IN YOU:Haters rule Jewish anti-semitism*1
Dt32-04a God:JUST are his ways JUST even though he is stron
COMMENTS
*1 Rashi on Lv26-17b emphasizes an important point
----------------------------------------------
The verse
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
FROM YOU: Haters rule
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
has TWO meanings, both of which are true.

This verse has the simple meaning
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Haters rule in you (literally: OVER YOU)
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

The verse ADDITIONALLY has the emphasis
connoted by the deviant grammatical order
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
IN-YOU-HATERS (i.e. Jewish anti-semites)
rule in you (over you)
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

This Rashi emphasizes how
- simple meaning
- exegetical meaning
need not be either identical or conflicting.
Rather the two can be complimentary. In this case
- one meaning is the meaning of the sentence
- the other meaning derives from the deviant order

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 The words with deviant grammatical order are capped.
For example Lv26-08a states
----------------------
FROM YOU: 5 pursue 100
----------------------

Proper order requires
---------------------
5 FROM YOU pursue 100
---------------------

The deviant order places emphasis on the phrase FROM YOU
Hence the Rashi cited in the POINT OF EMPHASIS column
------------------------------------------------------
Even 5 weaklings--that is ANY people FROM YOU--will
be able to pursue 100
