VERSE: Nu05-19a
Nu05-19a
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-04

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
One of Rashis 6 main goals is to explain
Grammar the same way modern Grammar books do.
Grammar deals with many topics. In this posting
we deal with the grammatical rules governing
sentences. Most Biblical verses are complete
sentences. However in certain rare cases TWO
or more Verses form ONE sentence.

EXAMPLE: Nu05-19:22
-------------------
Nu05-18:22 is a 6 verse sentence containing
the curse that the priest administers to
the suspected Adulteress. It has two main
clauses (IF YOU DID...IF YOU DIDNT) as well
as parenthetical phrases. Rashis job is to
clarify its structure.

-------------------------------------------------------
VERSE TEXT OF VERSE
------- -----------------------------------------------
Nu05-19 And the priest swears her
       A) IF you didnt commit adultery
          THEN be free
Nu05-20 B) If you did commit adultery
Nu06-21 (And the priest swears her)
THEN you will be a curse in your nation
[THEN] you will have swollen belly, fallen thigh
Nu06-22 [THEN] thighs will fall, bellys swell
C) And the women affirms the oath: AMEN AMEN

COMMENTS

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 Rashi makes a further comment
----------------------------------------------------
Notice how
- Clause 1 deals with the NO SIN case
- Clause 2 deals with the -- SIN case

Rashi uses an OTHER VERSE technique. Citing Ex23-02b or
Dt16-20a which requires that courtroom procedure be
slightly biased towards aquittal (e.g. a 1 person
majority can NOT convict but CAN aquit) Rashi explains
the ORDERING of CLAUSE 1 and CLAUSE 2
- The Torah mentions the NO SIN case first since
judicial procedure requires a bias towards acquittal
- This is similar to the 1 vote majority rule
- It is also similar to eg opening court arguments
with defense first: prosecution second

However Rashis main point on this verse is the complicated
nature of the multi-verse sentence.
