SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis 10 main goals is the explanation of
word meaning the same way a dictionary explains meaning.
We call this the Rashi method of WORD MEANING.
Rashi had 10 vehicles by which to explain words.
Today we examine three submethods of meaning.
-----------------------------------------------------
The UNIFIED MEANING submethod seeks to find a UNIFIED
MEANING to a root with disparate meanings.
-----------------------------------------------------
EXAMPLE: Nu11-32a Mem-Ayin-Tet - M&@ =LITTLE; SMALLEST
---------------------------------------------------
The Hebrew root Mem-Ayin-Tet can either mean
- FEW - an ABSOLUTE small number
- SMALLEST - a RELATIVE small number
Hence Rashi translates Nu11-32a as follows
------------------------------------------
The SMALLEST [Gatherer] gathered the
volume of 10 Chomers
------------------------------------------
The Root Mem-Ayin-Tet has about 6 related meanings
---------------------------------------------------------
Ec05-01 LITTLE/FEW Therefore your words should be FEW
Ex11-16 MINIATURE I will be for them a MINIATURE temple
Ez29-15 MAKE SMALL I-ll make them SMALLER;they wont reign
Nu11-32a SMALLEST*1 The SMALLEST gatherer gathered 10 Chomers
Gn26-10 ALMOST Someone ALMOST slept with your wife
Nu16-09 ENOUGH? ISN-T IT ENOUGH you are Levites
----------------------------------------------------------
See LIST863x for a summary and related meanings
EXAMPLE: Nun-Tet-Shin - N@$ = LET GO
-------------------------------------
The root Nun-Tet-Shin has a primary meaning
of LEAVING ALONE; LETTING GO. From this we
obtain 3 meanings
- Gn31-28 You didn't LET ME kiss my children
- 1S17-28 who did you LEAVE the sheep with
--
- Ho12-15 His blood LEAVES/SPREADS OUT on him
- Nu11-31b the quails were LET OUT/SPREAD OUT on wilderness
--
- 1S18-05 Remove her LET-OUT-BRANCHES (Over-Hanging)
In other words from the primary meaning of LETTING GO;
NOT STOPPING we obtain meanings
- LET GO
- SPREAD OUT (Something LET GO, spreads out)
- OverHanging BRANCHES (Which are LET OUT)
See LIST863y for a summary
EXAMPLE: Gimel Zayin (GWZ) SHEARINGS
------------------------------------
The Hebrew root
- Gimel Zayin Zayin refers to the process of SHEARING
- Gimel Zayin is a NOUN form meaning a SHEARING
From this fundamental meaning we obtain the
meaning of SWOOPING AROUND since SHEARINGS
are light weight and fly around
Hence the related root Gimel Vav Zayin can mean
- Nu11-31a quails SWOOPED in from the sea
- P090-10 our years quickly SwOOP; we fly away
- Na01-12 Although you have SWOOPED away; no more
--
- Jb01-20 Job rent his garments; SHEARED his hair
- P072-06 Justice to dislocated=dew on SHEARINGS
Here we see that Gimel Zayin can mean both
- SWOOP
- SHEARINGS
See LIST863z for a summary
---------------------------------------------------
The METONOMY method seeks to obtain meaning
by equating a word or phrase with something RELATED.
For example AMERICA defeated IRAQ really means that
the AMERICAN PEOPLE defeated the IRAQii PEOPLE.
---------------------------------------------------
It is common in POETRY to use phrases to indicate
something related. I call this the method of
METONOMIC PHRASES.
EXAMPLE: Nu11-31c
-----------------
Nu11-31 states
-----------------------------------------
God swooped quails in from the sea
they spread out on the wilderness
...and TWO CUBITS HIGH
-----------------------------------------
Rashi comments on the phrase Two CUBITS HIGH
--------------------------------------------
A persons HEIGHT is about 2 CUBITS. So the
statement 2 CUBITS HIGH means the quails were
ACCESSIBLE at arms reach without having to
bend time (A punchy description of obese
people overeating and not exercising or exerting)
-------------------------------------------------
See LIST871O for a list of METONOMIC POETIC PHRASES
----------------------------------------------
The NAMING BY VERSE method seeks to understand
the nuances of a word by examining verses that
use that word.
-----------------------------------------------
EXAMPLE Shin Tet Cheth $@X Means to SPREAD
------------------------------------------
In the following verses Shin Tet Cheth
naturally translates as SPREAD OUT
- Nu11-32b They SPREAD them out on the field
- P088-10 I SPREAD my hands to you
- Jr08-02 SPREAD their bones out under the sun..
- Jb12-23 He exiles the Nations he gave a SPREAD
- Ez26-05 It will be Ruins...a place for NET SPREADERS
