SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- A powerful but simple Rashi method is the CITATION or CROSS- REFERENCING of an OTHER VERSE for the purpose of adding FURTHER DETAILS to a verse we are studying. We call this the OTHER VERSE method. There are three submethods to the OTHER VERSE method. If the verse actually CITES or refers to an OTHER VERSE we call this the SUBMETHOD of CITATION. If the OTHER VERSE explains the meaning of some term in the first verse we call this the SUBMETHOD of MEANING. If the first verse does not cite an other verse and if no meaning is explained then we call this the SUBMETHOD of FURTHER DETAILS since the 2nd verse either confirms the first verse or typically adds FURTHER DETAILS to the first verse Today we bring a pair of verses which simultaneously sheds light on two items. EXAMPLE Dt03-24c Dt03-24d Dt03-24e ---------------------------------- Verse Dt03-24 ------------------------------ [Moses had been punished by God and denied entry into the land of Israel He now pleads that God change His mind] God: You have begun to show your servant - your GREATNESS - your MIGHTY HAND ------------------------------ Rashi illuminates the nuances of the terms: GREATNESS, MIGHTY, HAND by citing one OTHER VERSE - Nu14-17:18 ------------------------------------------- [God had threatened to destroy the Jewish people for their sin of the spies: Moses seeks mercy] And Now May you make GREAT the STRENGTH OF GOD as you have cited to me as follows: God is long suffering and abundant in Mercy ------------------------------------------- Rashi comments --------------------------------- We can infer the meaning of GREATNESS and MIGHT from the OTHER VERSE Nu14-17:18 GREATNESS refers to Gods capacity to forgive and overlook justly deserved punishment MIGHT refers to Gods STRENGTH: That is, God WITHOLDS His anger [The preceding two explanations come from the OTHER VERSE--Rashi now extrapolates the theme and applies it to the word HAND] GODS HAND refers to Gods capacity to OPEN HIS HANDS and RECIEVE repentants --------------------------------- LIST250h below summarizes these inference of meanings from OTHER VERSES.

God: | And now GOD | Entreaty for Mercy
you have shown me | |||
-Your GREATNESS | May you make GREAT*10 | GREAT=Forgive sinner
-Your HAND*1 | HAND=open to receive
-that is MIGHTY | your STRENGTH*2 | MIGHT=WITHOLD agner

*1 The terms GREAT and MIGHT-STRENGTH are used in both verses while the term HAND is not. Rashi extrapolates the approach--MIGHT/GREAT = CAPACITY TO FORGIVE, and applies this approach, inferred from the common use of the two terms MIGHT/GREAT, to the term HAND: Rashi interprets HAND as OPEN HANDS TO RECEIVE REPENTANTS. *2 - The word GREAT is IDENTICALLY used in both verses - But MIGHT and STRENGTH are DIFFERENT words which mean the same thing(Synonyms)

*10 Rashi states an alternative interpretation ----------------------------------------------- The SIMPLE meaning of the text is that God had shown MOSES his MIGHT in defeating various armies that had attacked Israel, a topic, mentioned in the last few chapters of Deuteronomy ----------------------------------------------- We interpret Rashi's phrase ---------------------------- SIMPLE MEANING OF THE TEXT ---------------------------- to refer to the natural dictionary meaning of the words used. However everyone agrees that the PREFERRED meaning of a verse is the MEANING BASED ON CONTEXT. Since the CONTEXT of the verse is one of SUPPLICATION it is PREFERABLE to interpret this verse based on similar verses of SUPPLICATION In other words the interpretation above is the TRUE MEANING of the text. By contrast the SIMPLE meaning of the text given above by Rashi is really the DICTIONARY meaning of the text taken out of CONTEXT The purpose of Rashi giving an ALTERNATIVE SIMPLE MEANING was not to suggest it as a possible ALTERNATIVE to the whole verse, but rather, Rashi's point is that it is the CONTEXT that justifies changing the NATURAL DICTIONARY meaning of the words to SIMILAR usages in CONTEXTS OF SUPPLICATION The above is an important approach to Rashi's with TWO MEANINGS. |
