SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
A powerful but simple Rashi method is the CITATION or CROSS-
REFERENCING of an OTHER VERSE for the purpose of adding
FURTHER DETAILS to a verse we are studying. We call this
the OTHER VERSE method. There are three submethods to the
OTHER VERSE method.

If the verse actually CITES or refers to an OTHER VERSE we
call this the SUBMETHOD of CITATION.

If the OTHER VERSE explains the meaning of
some term in the first verse we call this the SUBMETHOD
of MEANING.

If the first verse does not cite an other verse and if
no meaning is explained then we call this the SUBMETHOD
of FURTHER DETAILS since the 2nd verse either confirms
the first verse or typically adds FURTHER DETAILS to
the first verse

EXAMPLE: VERSES DISCUSSING THE MOLECH IDOLATRY RITUAL
------------------------------------------------------
The following 4 verses uses phrases describing the
MOLECH idolatry
---------------------------------------------------------------
Dt18-10a PASSES son and daughter thru fire
Dt18-21 don't GIVE your descendants to be PASSED to the MOLECH
Dt20-02 who GIVES of his descendans to the MOLECH
Dt12-31 they BURNED their sons and daughters to their gods
---------------------------------------------------------------

Notice the varied language in the above verses
- DESCRIPTION OF WORSHIP is indicated with 3 words
------------------------
- PASS
- GIVE
- BURN

- DESCRIPTION OF CHILDREN is indicated with 2 phrases
-------------------------
- son and daughter
- descendants

- DESCRIPTION OF IDOLS are indicated in two ways
---------------------
- Molech
- gods

The verses together lead to the Rashi comment
------------------------------------------------
The MOLECH worship consisted of
- two parallel bonfires
- the children are passed between them
- The children were not burned to death [but
learned (in a horrible way) that being BURNED
is part of life]
------------------------------------------------

Rashi infers this because although one verse speaks
about BURNING IN FIRE the other verses speak about
PASSING CHILDREN.

LIST250i summarizes this argument

EXAMPLE: Dt18-09a
-----------------
Dt18-09 states
---------------------------------------------------
When you come to the land that God gives you
don't LEARN TO DO the abominations of these non Jews
---------------------------------------------------

The meaning of this verse is illuminated by an OTHER VERSE
which gives further details. Dt12-30 states
----------------------------------------------------
Dont INQUIRE..how do these nations worship their
gods and I WILL DO SIMILARLY
----------------------------------------------------

Hence the Rashi comment
-------------------------------------------------
LEARNING/INQUIRING for the purposes of DOING like
the idolaters is prohibited. But it is certainly
permissable to learn in order to instruct people
on how bad these idolaters were and to keep them
away from their practices
