RASHIS COVERED: Dt16-18e Judges should be wise & known to people Dt16-18f Dt16-18c VERY BRIEF SUMMARY: ------------------- -- Dt16-18 states Appoint JUDGES & POLICE in all CITIES in the -- land that God gives you to your tribes &they-ll judge properly Rashi states that there are 3 criteria for judge appointment - They must be wise - They must be from the city - They must be from the tribe But Dt16-18 doesnt really speak about WISDOM and appointing judges from tribes. Rashis real derivation comes from an OTHER VERSE--Dt01-13 which explicitly states -- Appoint WISE judges who are KNOWN TO YOUR TRIBES --------------------------------------- TODAYS RASHI RULE: OTHER VERSES TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE: FURTHER DETAILS --------------------------------------- BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE RULE and SUBRULE ----------------------------------------- The rule of OTHER VERSES simply means that Rashi is explaining one verse by citing an OTHER VERSE One way of doing this is to cross reference a verse that speaks about the SAME topic but gives FURTHER details. STANDARD EXAMPLE ---------------- The following example comes from the Passover Hagaddah Dt26-05 states that ------------------------------- With only a FEW PEOPLE did the Jews go down to Egypt ------------------------------- FURTHER DETAILS on the meaning of the Biblical phrase FEW PEOPLE is provided in Gn46. EXERCISE: --------- Before reading the Rashi try reading Gn46 yourself and see if you can discover the further details. RASHIS SOLUTION --------------- Rashi cites Gn46-27 ----------------------------- The total number of people who came with Jacob to Egypt is 70 ----------------------------- Thus the Rashi method of OTHER VERSES in this case has explained to us that the FEW PEOPLE that went down to Egypt refers to SEVENTY people STANDARD REFERENCES FOR THIS RULE --------------------------------- http://www.Rashiyomi.com/other-20.htm TODAYS EXAMPLE -------------- Here are the 2 verses on judges. Note especially how one verse is clearer than the other. In a second list we show how there is an anomaly and problem in Dt16-18 Nevertheless the method of OTHER VERSES is simpler. This affords us an opportunity to discuss the difference between Leibowitz-Boncheck and this email list. | ||
REQUIREMENT | IN Dt16-18 | OTHER VERSE-Dt01-13 |
Wise judges | They will judge righteously | Wise Judges*1 |
Belong to city | Place in all your cities*2 | Known to you*2 |
Belong to tribe | that God gives to tribes*3 | Known to your tribes |
COMMENTS | ||
*1 Note how the OTHER-VERSE phrase WISE JUDGES is more explicit than the current verse which states WILL JUDGE RIGHTEOUSLY (That is since they must judge RIGHTEOUSLY they must have the wisdom to judge properly) *2 In this case the current verse which states explicitly PLAcE JUDGES IN ALL CITIES is clearer than the OTHER VERSE which simply says that the Judges should be KNOWN to YOU *3 I derive the TRIBAL REQUIREMENT from the explicit verse in Dt01-13 that judges should be appointed THAT ARE KNOWN TO YOUR TRIBES. Thus indeed Rashi-is-Simple*10 An alternate derivation illustrating the difference between Dr Leibowitz and this email group will be presented tomorrow |
