Arab Respect

VERSE: Gn25-18a Arabs more respected while Ishmael Alive

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY

In Gn16-12 God promises that Ishmael (The Arab people) will be
NOMADIC--they will DWELL all over the place. But in Gn25-18 the
phraseology abruptly changes: We are told that the Arabs DROP
IN all over the place. Gn25-18 was stated after the death of
both Abraham and Ishmael*10. The less respectful term DROP IN
seems to imply that while Abraham & Ishmael lived,Arabs DWELT
(respectfully among everybody); but after Abraham & Ishmaels
death Arabs were less respected (They DROPPED IN vs DWELT)

TODAYS RASHI RULE: ALIGNMENT
TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE: TWO CASES
----------------------------------

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF RULE

Many Rashis do NOT focus on an internal analysis of the verse.
There may be nothing bothering Rashi in THAT verse. The words
used may all be normal.

But when the given verse is compared with another verse--that
is, when the two verses are ALIGNED together-- we see blatant
differences.

The ALIGNED verses therefore suggest that these ALIGNED
DIFFERENCES were deliberately placed there to emphasize
certain nuances.

A nifty way of explaining the ALIGNED verses is to think
of ALIGNMENT as the vehicle that the Biblical Author uses
to indicate FOOTNOTES. That is, a modern writer might use
FOOTNOTES to indicate details; the Biblical Author instead
used REPEATED ALIGNED VERSES with DIFFERENT DETAILS.

The simplest case of ALIGNMENT is when the differences
CLEARLY and EXPLICITLY show that we are dealing with
two cases each with different details. Todays example
shows that two different verses about arab respect
deal with 2 situations--one before Abraham died, the
other after.

VERSE PHRASE1 PHRASE2 PHRASE3
Gn16-12 He will DWELL on all his brothers
Gn25-18a They DWELT from CHAVILA to SHUR
Gn25-18 HE DROPPED IN on all his brothers
Differs *1 *2 *3
COMMENTS
*1
Note the difference between the 2nd row vs the 1st-3rd
row: The 2nd row is stated in the plural. This contrasting
plural hilights the singular used in the 1st and 3rd row--
for now the ONLY difference between the first and 3rd row
is that one uses the phrase DWELL while the other uses the
phrase DROPPED IN. See footnotes #2 #3 for further details

Why then is the 2nd row stated?

First note that it gives details to the concept that the
Arabs dwell ALL OVER THE PLACE--in fact the Arabs dwelt
   from CHAVILA to SHUR...to SYRIA

Second there is a hint here that there are RESPECTED and
NON-RESPECTED Arabs since even after Ishmaels death some
Arabs DWELT everywhere (RESPECTFUL) while others DROPPED
   IN everywhere (NOT RESPECTFUL).

*2 The first two rows use the respectful term DWELL while the
3rd row (Spoken after the death of both Abraham and Ishmael)
uses the lest respectful term DROPPED IN*11. This implies that
after Abraham and Ishmael died Arabs were treated with less
respect (They couldnt just DWELL; rather they had to DROP IN)

*3 The first and 3rd rows are IDENTICAL except that one uses
the word DWELL while the other uses the word DROPPED IN*11
The only difference between these verses is that the first
verse was spoken during the lifetime of Abraham and Ishmael
while the 2nd verse was spoken after the lifetime of
   Abraham and Ishael.
