VERSES WITH HOUSE

RASHIS COVERED: Gn45-16a BAYIT means HOUSE,INSIDE,CLASPS,GROUP
Ex26-29a Ex25-11a

We continue the series started yesterday exploring the
4 meanings of the word BAYIT, which can mean
- HOUSE
- INSIDE
- CLASPS
- FAMILY.

In this 2nd list we present about a dozen verses with the word
HOUSE and show which meaning is used

COMMENTS
*1 In these footnotes we explore WHEN/WHY Rashi comments. Rashi
will frequently comment when ONE verse uses SEVERAL meanings
to the SAME ROOT. Rashi will frequently comment in such
situtations in order to avoid the potential confusion.

*1a Lv14-41b uses TWO meanings for BAYIT: HOUSE and INSIDE

*1b
EX25-27 uses THREE meanings of the same ONE WORD (LAMED)

The Hebrew prefix letter LAMED has 3 distinct
meanings in this verse. Lamed can mean both
   - OPPOSITE
   - GOAL/PURPOSE
   - FOR.
   Hence Rashi translates the verse

-The table rings will be OPPOSITE(Ex25-27a)
-the table rim; They (The table rings)
   -will serve FOR(Ex25-27b) clasps
-FOR (Ex25-27c) the table carrying logs

*1c
This Chapter(Gn45) uses TWO meanings of the same ONE WORD-
   BAYIT.

Concerning the news that Josephs brothers
came we see that the Hebrew BAYIT can
   alternately mean HOUSE or HOUSEHOLD

   -Gn45-02a Pharohs HOUSEHOLD heard
-Gn45-16a The news was heard in Pharohs HOUSE

*2 Note the varied usages here
   - GROUP
   - STAFF
   - HEADQUARRTERS
   - FAMILY
   - HOUSEHOLD
   - CITY

It is hard to pinpoint one meaning. The common idea seems
to be CONNECTED GROUP OF PEOPLE.

*5 The actual sin of Peor happened in a place
   named SHITTIM(Nu25-01)

The actual idol is called the MASTERS OF
   PEOR

Hence the phrase THE HOUSE OF PEOR does
   not refer to
   - the name of the PLACE
   - the name of the IDOL
But instead must refer to the
   - idol HEADQUARTERS.

*6 Rashi points out that the word IN is missing in this verse
   The verse should read

-The news [IN] Pharohs house was that Josephs brothers
   -had arrived

Such missing PREPOSITIONS are called ELLIPSIS and are common
in the Bible. See the examples in posting Nu30-11a for
   examples (http://www.Rashiyomi.com/nu30-11a.htm

*7 We present here the bottom line meaning of the verse.
However a more comprehensive approach shows that the
identification of the particular meaning of BAYIT needed
is inferred from the Rabbi Ishmael rule of CONTRADICTORY
   verses. Please see http://www.RashiYomi.com/ex12-03d.htm
   for complete details.
