L-A-H means EXHAUSTED
(C) Dr Hendel, Nov-02

VERSE: Gn47-13b L-A-H means EXHAUSTED/BURDENED/WEARY

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY

Gn47-13 should be translated
-- And Egypt got EXHAUSTED (seeking food) from the famine
Here the Hebrew root Lamed-Aleph-Hey should be translated
as EXHAUSTED. In reviewing this verse we will find an
interesting 4 way controversy between Rashi-Rav-Sadia and
Radack and Ibn Ezra. However it will appear reasonable to
unify these views.

TODAYS RASHI RULE: GRAMMARr
TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE: CONJUGATION
----------------------------------

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF TODAYS RASHI RULE

One of Rashis 6 main goals is to explain grammar the
same way modern dictionaries explain grammar. One very
important function of grammar is to explain conjugation
of verbs. Rashi will especially comment on roots with
several weak letters as the rules for conjugating these
roots are obscure

TODAYS LISTS

We present two lists.

The first list is GRAMMATICAL and derived from Al Silbermans
Grammatical Form Konkordance---we show roots obeying this
conjugation form*10

The 2nd list is SEMANTICAL--& explores the meaning of LAH

Here is the first list:

These are the roots
that have the form VaTayTaH (Patach-Tzaray-Patach)
ROOT MEANING VERSE COMMENTS/EXPLANATION
Y L C walk Gn24-61 Root begins with YUD
Y R D descend 2S22-10 Root begins with YUD
Y D A know Gn04-17 Root begins with YUD
----- -------- ------- --------------------------
T A H wander Gn21-14 Last letter=hey; 2nd letter = Guttural*1
L A H weary Gn47-13 See next entry--is the root LAH or LHH?
----- -------- ------- --------------------------
L H H weary Gn47-13 See next entry--is the root LAH or LHH?
K A A Dislodge Gn32-26 Last 2 root letters are identical*2
R A A hurt Gn21-11 Last 2 root letters are identical
K L L belittle Gn16-04 Last 2 root letters are identical
COMMENTS
*1 So TWO root letters are weak. There are very few examples
of these Biblical roots--there are not enough cases to
justify ONE UNIQUE APPROACH. Hence we have controversy
on the correct grammatical form.

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 Job17-07 and Ez19-07 are 2 other examples
L A H means WEARY
(C) Dr Hendel, Nov-02

The Roots L-A-H and L-H-H occur rarely. There are only
2 instances of L-H-H and only about a dozen of L-A-H.

The list below shows that L-A-H means
- exhausted
- weary
- burdensome

The two verses with the root L-H-H fit into this pattern.
Hence, Rashi and Rav Sadia suggest a unified meaning to
these two grammatical roots(L-H-H and L-A-H have the
same meaning).By contrast Radack and Ibn Ezra think that
L-H-H means CRAZY while L-A-H means WEARY.
VERSE ROOT MEANING of VERSE WITH ROOT L-A-A or L-A-H capped
Jb04-02 L-A-H We WEARY of trying to talk to you
Gn19-11 L-A-H They got TIRED of trying to find the door
Mi06-03 L-A-H How have I BURDENED you
Ex18-08 L-A-H All the BURDEN they experienced in Egypt
------- ------- -------------------------------------------------
Gn47-13 L-H-H Egypt got WORN OUT from the FAMINE
Pr26-18 L-H-H Double crossers are like bowing till FATIGUE*1
