TODAYS RASHI RULE: WORD MEANINGS
TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE: UNIFIED MEANING
-------------------------------------
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF RULE
One of Rashis 6 main goals is to explain the meaning of words the
same way a dictionary explains words. Rashi has a variety of
vehicles by which he explains words. One vehicle is to present
a Hebrew root, suggest a unifying meaning*11, and then apply this
suggested unifying meaning to several examples. The application
of this unifying meaning to disparate examples gives credibility
to Rashis suggested thesis and also enriches our understanding
of the root. This Rashi is a peach of a Rashi that illustrates
5 distinct levels of understanding Rashi.

COMMENTS
|
*1 This Rashi (Gn18-10a) presents the unifying theme.
The RECURRING DATE NEXT YEAR is called the LIVE TIME.
Thus we explicitly see that LIFE=RECURRENCE
The list revus this idea in other Rashis
*2 The philosophical literature on the meaning of life is
rich and complex. Suffice it to say that the Torah views
LIFE vs INANIMACY as AN EXISTENCE THAT HAS THE AUTONOMOUS
ABILITY TO RECUR (by sustaining itself)
*3 The word LIVE when contrasted with ANIMAL means WILD LIFE
(CHET YUD HEY). However this word is never used for birds.
Thus this word (LIVE) is new here (LIVE BIRD). Rashi uses
the RECURRENCE IDEA---a LIVE BIRD is a bird that can
recover (RECUR) from any illness. This excludes a MORTALLY
WOUNDED BIRD (TERAYFAH) who cannot RECOVER/RECUR from
their illness
