RASHIS COVERED:Ex12-03d Pascal lamb per family Or per house Or..
Ex12-46b
VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
Ex12-03 talks about how Jews take lambs for the pascal lamb. The
verse(s) state
-- Speak to the Jews and let them take
-- a lamb to their FATHERS HOUSE
-- a lamb to their HOUSE
Note the 2 latter phrases which look redundant and complementary.
The Rabbi Ishmael rule of contradictory/complementary verses
allows resolving complementariness by using BROAD/LITERAL meaning
- Speak to the Jews..take a LAMB PER FAMILY (or if needed)
- a LAMB PER HOUSE (With many families per house)

TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE: BROAD-LITERAL

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF TODAYS RASHI RULE
Some Rashis focus either on Dictionary meaning or grammar. But
many Rashis explore relationship between verses that either
contradict each other or complement each other. The Rabbi Ishmael
rule of Contradictory/complementary verses explores 5 methods
of resolving verse pairs. One such method suggests resolving
complementary verses by using RESTRICTIVE vs BROAD MEANINGS.
STANDARD EXAMPLE
Ex12-03 states that Jews should take
-- a lamb for each fathers house
-- a lamb for each house
The Rabbi Ishmael rule utilizes the fact that the word house
can be literal (HOUSE) or can broadly mean any FAMILY/GROUP.
Hence we read the verses as follows
-- EACH FAMILY TAKES A LAMB (or if there is too much meat)
-- EACH HOUSE takes a lamb(Or if there will be leftover)
-- A HOUSE & ITS NEARBY NEIGHBOR take a lamb)

COMMENTS
|
*1 *2 *3 *4 See main posting for notes on these former examples
*5 The word HOUSE is used TWICE in this ONE Verse.
- The first occurence is interpreted broadly- FAMILY
- the 2nd occurence is interpreted literally- HOUSE
The entire text-Ex12-03:04 then smoothly reads as folows
-Tell the Jews to take ONE LAMB either
-a) Per FAMILY (and if there will be leftover meat then)
-b) Per HOUSE (and if there will be leftover meat then)
-c) PER HOUSE & NEARBY NEIGHBOR
See footnote *14

LONGER FOOTNOTES
|
*14 Ex12-46 states about the Passover lamb
-Eat it in ONE HOUSE...
-Dont take food out of the HOUSE
But we have just seen in Ex12-03:04 that two NEARBY
NEIGHBORS can eat from the Pascal lamb. Indeed it says
-Tell the Jews to take ONE LAMB either
-a) Per FAMILY (and if there will be leftover meat then)
-b) Per HOUSE (and if there will be leftover meat then)
-c) PER HOUSE & NEARBY NEIGHBOR
Consequently we interpret the word HOUSE here broadly
as meaning GROUP
ie after a GROUP has been assigned to a Pascal lamb then
-Eat the Pascal lamb in ONE GROUP...
-Dont take food out of the GROUP...
