RASHIS COVERED: Gn14-06c AL means NEAR/FOR
Gn49-13b Gn24-30a Gn38-12a
VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
One of Rashis 6 main goals is to translate words like a
dictionary. Frequently Rashi will indicate several disparate
meanings to a word which many people think have one meaning.
This is particularly true with standard connective words like
IN, TO, FROM, ON. In this series of postings we examine the
many meanings of the Hebrew word AYIN-LAMED which is
traditionally translated as ON. The LIST below shows several
examples where AYIN LAMED can mean NEAR or NEAR SOMETHING FOR
PURPOSES OF WATCHING IT. Other meanings will be covered in
future postings

COMMENTS
|
*1 These verses can simply be translated with the word NEAR
However Rashi points out that we can also translate it
as NEAR IN ORDER TO LOOK OVER SOMETHING. eg Gn24-30a
can be interpreted
--------------------------------------------------
Laban came and found him standing NEAR the camels
--------------------------------------------------
OR--it can be translated with an added emphasis
of nuance as follows----
---------------------------------------------------
Laban came and found him standing NEAR the camels
in order to ATTEND and LOOK OVER THEM
---------------------------------------------------
