RASHIS COVERED: Gn33-10b BECAUSE ON YES means SINCE!!!!
Gn38-26c Nu10-31b Nu14-43a

QUESTION
--------
Ex01-05a states that PHAROHS DAUGHTER WAS WALKING ON THE NILE
But Rashi states that the Hebrew word AYIN-LAMED means NEAR.
Thus Rashi translates the verse: PHAROHS DAUGHTER WAS WALKING
NEAR THE NILE. Is this the real meaning of AYIN-LAMED? Can
other examples be produced.

ANSWER
------
The Hebrew word AYIN-LAMED which is usually translated as
ON in fact has half a dozen meanings in addition to the special
idiomatic meanings it has with other words. Here are some
examples: AYIN-LAMED can mean a) ON, b) WITH, c) AT THE TIME OF
d) TOWARDS, e) FOR, f) NEAR, g) BESIDES. Furthermore in
conjunction with other words it can have idiomatic meaning--for
example it can mean a) DEPRESSED, b) THEREFORE or SINCE.

This list will then grow over the next 10 issues

In this issue we present examples where the idiomatic
phrase ON THE FACE OF means DEPRESSED/ANGRY or UPSET.

VERSE TEXT OF VERSE: KI AL KAYN means SINCE
Gn18-05c Please eat, SINCE you came by me*1
Gn18-05d Please eat, SINCE you came by me*1
Gn19-08b Leave them alone SINCE they are my guests

Gn38-26c Leave her alone SINCE it is my fault
Nu10-31b Please guide us SINCE you know our paths
Nu14-43a God is not with you SINCE you sinned
COMMENTS
*1 Rashi explicitly states that KI AL KAYN means SINCE
Rashi then explains the verse
-------------------------------------
I asked you to STOP OVER by me
You accepted
SINCE you accepted THEREFORE have a bite
before leaving (Because part of STAYING
OVER is having a bite)
-------------------------------------

*2 Rashi points out the POLITICS of the situation
If Esauv knows that Jacob deals with angels
maybe he will be afraid to start up with him
