VERSE: Ex13-19b

RASHIS COVERED: Ex13-19b Ex13-19a
Ex13-19b
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-03

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
A very powerful Rashi technique is to
ALIGN several verses speaking about the
same topic. The subtle differences
in these verses suggest that the Biblical
Author intended the emphasis and nuances
that are contrasted by the alignments.

In the example today we align Ex13-19
Gn50-24 and Gn50-25 all of which speak
about Josephs burial. Examining 3 alignments
of almost identical phrases leads one to
conclude 3 items

- Joseph told his brothers he would die

- But Swore future Jewish generations
to bring up his coffin to Israel

- Made them promise to bring up the
coffins of his brothers.*10

This and the next lists align various
verses dealing with Josephs death

The alignments strongly show that
Joseph made people take oaths to
bring up his bones from Egypt

The footnotes bring further support
VERSE PHRASE1 PHRASE2 PHRASE3
Gn50-24 Joseph told his brothers
Gn50-25 Joseph swore the Jews as follows
Ex13-19 Joseph swore the Jews as follows
Differs *1 *2 *3
COMMENTS
*1 *2 Joseph TOLD his BROTHERS but
SWORE the JEWS

The nuances of JEWS vs BROTHERS is that
he left orders for all succeeding
generations to bring up his coffin

*3 The AS FOLLOWS indicates a command for
others (He simply told his brothers he
was dying while he swore the others with
a command)

*10 DOUBLE WORDS indicate emphasis.
Furthermore the INFINITIVE is used--this
always denotes ACTIVITY OVER TIME.

The implication is that the OATHS were
not at one point in time but were over
many generations(CONTINUOUSLY)

Gn50-25 Bring up my coffin to Israel ---------
Ex13-19 Bring up my coffin to Israel with you

*1 The same phrase

*2 The extra phrase WITH YOU places an
emphasis: Bring up BOTH my coffin and
your coffin (That is the coffins of the
brothers) *10 *11

LONGER FOOTNOTES
*10 A point of methodology here:

People like Dr Leibowitz and Rabbi Boncheck
would hold that Rashi derives his inference
from the EXTRA WORDS (With you).

By contrast I dont believe EXTRA WORDS
in and of themselves are sufficient.
After all the Torah spoke in human language!

However the ALIGNMENT casts an emphasis
on the extra words since they are absent
in the other verse. It is this emphasis
which justifies Rashi

*11 Rashi also offers the following (obvious)
insights:
--------------------------------------
Jacob asked to be brought up to Israel
immediately since Joseph as ViceRoy had
the authority to bring his father up

By contrast after Josephs death no one
had the power to violate Egyptian customs
So they had to stay buried in Egypt
till the Exodus (It would have been
politically insulting to leave Egypt)
