VERY BRIEF SUMMARY ------------------ One of Rashis 6 main goals is to give the meanings of words the same way the dictionary does. Rashi sometimes traces SPECIAL WORDS that occur several dozen times in the Torah-- Rashi shows a unifying thread and commonality of meaning. The word LAYMOR is the infinitive of the word TO SAY--so the simple translation of LAYMOR means TO BE SAID. In the lists below we will explore 4 manifestations of verses where TO BE SAID occurs. EXAMPLE 1: Lv10-16c TO BE SAID=REQUEST RESPONSE ----------------------------------------------- TEXT: Moses got angry TO BE SAID RASHI: Moses demanded an ANSWER to what angered him (Hence the verse says TO BE SAID) EXAMPLE 2: Dt15-11b TO BE SAID=Spread the word ---------------------------------------------- TEXT: Therefore I command charity laws TO BE SAID RASHI: One should spread the word about the importance of charity laws and the reward for following them EXAMPLE 3: Nu26-03b TO BE SAID=Transmit --------------------------------------- TEXT: God spoke to Moses/Elazar TO BE SAID RASHI: The commandment should be transmitted to Jews EXAMPLE 4: Nu12-13b TO BE SAID-- ``````````Moses demands response -------------------------------- TEXT: Moses prayed to God, for his ````sister TO BE SAID RASHI: Moses, as it were, demanded `````` from God an answer | ||

*10 Actually there are 2 Rashis citing Sifrahs that list these verses Nu12-13b Dt03-23b Remarkably - one of these Rashis says there were 4 places - one of these Rashis says there were 3 places But the list above shows there are 5. There are at least 4 answers why Rashi said 3 and 4 vs 5. (Some come from the Sifsay chachamim while some come from me) These 4 reasons are presented below. However the main point of Rashi is that MOSES SPOKE TO GOD..SAYING occurs only 5 times (The fact that 3 or 4 of these 5 have special characteristics is a SECONDARY point to Rashi--the primary point is that there are 5 verses). Here are the explanations on why Rashi omitted cases EXPLANATION 1(Hendel) ------------- 3 of the 5 verses use non-conventional words for talking (SCREAM, SUPPLICATE etc) Hence Rashi did not have to mention the obvious cases of MOSES SPOKE...TO BE SAID but did have to emphasize the non obvious cases EXPLANATION 2(Sifsay Chachamim) ------------- 3 of the 5 verses involve PRAYER (supplicate or screaming to God on issues). Hence Rashi only mentioned those prayers where Moses demanded an answer (Since there is a certain contradiction and non-expectedness in praying in supplication but demanding an answer). EXPLANATION 3(Hendel) --------------------- In 4 of the 5 verses one can SEE Gods answer (eg Moses asked for a leader and God responds by ordering Joshua picked). Hence Rashi only picked those examples of verses where it TO BE SAID is followed by Gods answer (Since those 4 cases PROVE that TO BE SAID indicates a demanded response from God) EXPLANATION 4(Hendel) --------------------- Only 4 of the verses have the phrase (Moses ....) TO GOD TO BE SAID (The 5th verse states MOSES SPOKE BEFORE GOD TO BE SAID. Hence Rashi only picked on the traditional TO GOD TO BE SAID verses and left out unconventional forms (BEFORE GOD) |
