VERY BRIEF SUMMARY ------------------ Many Rashis focus on meaning of words or grammatical function. However some Rashis focus on comparisons with other verses. Occasionally the Torah will repeat almost verbatim the same Chapters. In such a case a fundamental goal of Rashi is to elucidate - which items in the repeated chapters CORRESPOND - which items are new - which items are different One such set of repeated chapters is Ex29 and Lv08 both of which describe in detail the CONSECRATION OF THE TEMPLE & PRIESTS. The lists below describe the 6 main units in the CONSECRATION chapters and where these occur in Ex29 and Lv08. Todays posting focuses on comparisons between these two chapters: Ex29 and Lv08. By reviewing all these comparisons together we enrich our appreciation of Rashi--Rashi was not commenting on oddities here and there..he was rather Reviewing ALL differences between the 2 chapters--he then hilighted the important differences.*10 EXAMPLE ------- Lv07-37 mentions SIX types of offerings - UP, REST, PEACE, SIN, GUILT and INAUGORATION By contrast Lv01 thru Lv06 only mention 5 types of offerings. The missing 6th type --THE INAUGORATION OFFERING--refer to the special offerings used to INAUGORATE the priests and mentioned in Ex28 and Lv08 EXAMPLE ------- The SIN offering mentioned in Lv08-02 corresponds to the SIN offering mentioned in Lv29-14 EXAMPLE ------- The INAUGORATION of the priestly garments is mentioned in both Lv08 and Ex29. An alignment of the 2 chapters shows that URIM and TUMIM were not mentioned in Ex29 but were mentioned in Lv08. Rashi therefore explains them by a cross reference to Nu27-21: The URIM and TUMIM enabled PRIESTLY PROPHECY EXAMPLE ------- A comparison of Lv08 and Ex29 show that both mention the consecration by oil---but only Lv08 mentions a 7-fold sprinkling on the altar. Hence Rashi feels obliged to mention that this 7-fold sprinkling is not mentioned in Ex29.

*10 We have called this Rashi procedure of - reviewing the TOTALITY of differences - BUT only hilighting a few of them we have called this Rashi approach the WORKBOOK APPROACH. The WORKBOOK APPROACH is used in school systems. A model example is done in Arithmetic or English The student is then asked to do the remaining exercises him/herself. Similarly here, Rashi hilights important differences--but to fully appreciate Rashi one must review all differences By reviewing all differences we enrich our perspective and make it global--for then Rashi is not perceived as being picky on a few phrases but rather Rashi is perceived as being deep and profound--reviewing 2 lists and exhaustively noting all differences |

Ex29 and Lv08 are almost identical. They describe the consecration procedure. The consecration procedure had 6 units. These 6 units are listed below along with the corresponding verses in each chapter. Further lists compare these individual units

We review the priestly garments mentioned in Ex28,Ex29 vs Lv08. Note that the URIM and TUMIM are mentioned in Lv08 but not in Ex29. Rashi explains their function by cross referencing Nu27-21--the URIM and TUMIM have PROPHETIC function The actual 8 priestly garments are mentioned in Ex28 By completely reviewing all 8 garments we enrich our understanding of Rashi--Rashi was not just commenting on the meaning of a word--he was rather explaining all differences between these chapters.*10 Since the order changes in the chapters we have numbered the items to indicate sequence order (eg the KETONET is mentioned #1 (first) in Ex29-05:06)

*1 The alignment shows that TZITZ (literally MASK) corresponds to NZR (Literally CROWN). Note how the justification for this inference is not MEANING-BASED (Crown and Mask seem to mean the same thing) but rather the justification is by ALIGNMENT *2 Some people might consider it disrespectful to translate MICHNATHAYIM as UNDERWEAR. But their function is to cover nudity--hence the translation UNDERWEAR is appropriate. Also: This explains why they are not mentioned -- it would be immodest to state that Moses dressed Aaron in the priestly underwear. *3 Now we understand Rashi. The URIM and TUMIM mentioned in Lv08 are not mentioned in Ex29. Furthermore they are not even mentioned in the list of 8 priestly garments in Ex28!! No wonder Rashi had to comment. Insights into the URIM and TUMIM can be obtained from 4 sources - Nu27-21 suggests that URIM and TUMIM were used for PRIESTLY PROPHETIC advice...in other words their function was prophetic - The word URIM comes from the Root UR which means LIGHT. In Hebrew LIGHT can refer to the LIGHTS of PROPHECY. - An example of the use of the URIM to deal with prophetic matters is mentioned in 1S23-09:12. From this story we infer that the URIM were connected with the AYFOD - In fact Tradition connects the URIM with the 12 stones on the PRIESTLY VEST POCKET (CHOSHEN) which were on the AYFOD. These 12 stones are mentioned in Ex28-17:20 -- they had the names of the 12 tribes--hence prophetic visions with the letters involved enabled answers to specific questions.
