VERY BRIEF SUMMARY ------------------ One of Rashis 6 main goals is to explain the meaning of words the same way a dictionary explains words. A key technique of Rashi in explaining words is clarification of the differences between words with almost identical meanings. EXAMPLE ------- The root Chet-Beth-Shin means to WRAP. Rashi notes that this root has a MEANING SIMILAR TO TIEING. By connecting WRAPPING and TIEING Rashi - enables a person to see commonality in the two activities - Rashi enables a person who never heard of the word WRAP to understand the meaning as related to SOME TYPE OF TIEING without (upon first reading) knowing the exact nuances This exposure to a ROUGH IDEA OF MEANING (i.e. WRAPPING is a form of TIEING) is a major function of Rashi who thereby enables students without big vocabularies to learn subtle words The list below shows the multiple uses of the word, WRAP, in the Biblical context | ||
