VERSE: Lv25-29c
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-03 | ||
VERY BRIEF SUMMARY ------------------ A major task of Rashi is to explain the meaning of words the same way the dictionary explains meaning. Rashi in fact will frequently infer NEW MEANINGS NUANCES and IDIOMS from context. EXAMPLE -------- When you sell a house in a walled city the REDEMPTION shall be till the completion of the year of sale RASHI: REDEMPTION means PERIOD OF POTENTIAL REDEMPTION In other words the verse is not speaking about - an actual redemption - a required redemption - but rather a potential redemption Furthermore the verse is defining the PERIOD when this potential redemption may take place. Thus the Bible is identifying the PERIOD when an act may take place with the ACT itself (ie it calls PERIOD OF REDEMPTION, REDEMPTION). (Similarly the word BAR-MITZVAH (Son of Mitzvoth) identifies the STATE OF OBLIGATION TO OBSERVE COMMANDMENTS with the TIME at which that obligation takes place---today the word BAR MITZVAH can also refer to the affair of celebration) Such transferences of meaning (TIME of an ACT--ACT) are common. Our point here is that Rashi infers the nuances of meaning from context | ||
