THIS POSTING HAS 2 LISTS
and WILL APPEAR FOR 2 DAYS
Please feel free to read it
piece by piece This is day #2

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
The traditional Rashi approach of Dr Leibowitz and Rabbi
Boncheck emphasizes the PROBLEM or the QUESTION. One
seeks something troublesome in the verse that is
BOTHERING Rashi---the Rashi comment is then perceived
as a resolution of this tension.

While this model may be fruitful for some Rashis,
nevertheless there is a wide spectrum of Rashis whose
focus is on STYLE.

One such powerful style is the GENERAL-DETAIL-GENERAL
style: First state a GENERAL theme; then give DETAILS;
finally recapitulate the GENERAL style.

We have posited that such a style indicates a PARAGRAPH
That is the DETAILS are perceived as EXAMPLES of the
GENERAL theme---as such they should not be taken
literally but rather partially generalized. This is
in fact the Rabbi Ishmael Guideline for interpreting the
GENERAL-DETAIL-GENERAL style

We remark that the MODERN paragraph notation which
consists of a BLANK line followed by a PARAGRAPH
followed by a BLANK line is the MODERN way of
indicating that the group of sentences in a paragraph
form one unit and should be so interpreted

EXAMPLES-Lv25-29d
-----------------
You can redeem the field
-- TILL THE END OF THE YEAR OF SALE
-------- DAYS shall be its redemption
-- ...A COMPLETE YEAR

The sequence YEAR-DAYS-YEAR strongly suggests that DAYS
means a FULL YEAR of 365 days (vs a fiscal year that
would end on eg Dec 31 or Apr 15 independent of the
beginning).

EXAMPLE-Lv25-18:19
------------------
-- YOU SHALL DWELL TRANQUILLY IN YOUR COUNTRY
-------- You shall have FOOD
-------- You shall eat to SAIETY
-- YOU SHALL DWELL TRANQUILLY IN YOUR COUNTRY

The GENERAL-DETAIL-GENERAL style creates a bullet
effect on the DETAIL clauses---it shows that the
Author wished to emphasize TWO details of the
general theme of dwelling tranquilly in the land.
-- PLENTY FROM THE outside WORLD (Enough food)
-- PLENTY FROM THE inside WORLD (a digestive saiety)

Compact exhibition of the GENERAL-DETAIL-GENERAL structure
of Lv25-29d. From this structure we infer that the
phrase DAYS can mean a FULL YEAR of 365 days.

LIST410c
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-03

Compact exhibition of the GENERAL-DETAIL-GENERAL structure
of Lv25-17:21. The GENERAL-DETAIL-GENERAL structure vests
a bullet effect on the details showing two blessings
- a blessing on the outside (plenty of food) and
- a blessing on the inside (the feeling of saiety)
PHRASE TYPE TEXT OF BACKGROUND/GENERAL TEXT OF DETAIL

BACKGROUND My blessing to you
COMMENTS
*1 The following will help elucidate our position
on this Rashi exegesis method:
Without the GENERAL-DETAIL-GENERAL structure I would
simply say that FRUITFUL LAND and SAIETY CONSUMPTION
are saying the same thing by repeating phrases. In
fact this -- the repetition of phrases -- is a common
Biblical method of emphasis.

But BECAUSE of the GENERAL-DETAIL-GENERAL structure
which creates a paragraph effect---because of this
structure we are obligated to view the two DETAIL
phrases as in effect being bulleted
-- SAIETY IN LAND (OUTSIDE WORLD)
-- SAIETY IN DIGESTION (INSIDE WORLD)

*2 Rashi also uses the methods of
-OTHER VERSES
Lv26-34 tells us that violation of the 7th year
sabbatical for lands is punished by exile.

This explicit other verse mirrors the proximity of
verses here which connect TRANQUIL RESIDENCE with
OBSERVANCE OF THE 7TH YEAR SABBATICAL.*10

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 I would go a step further. The Bible EXPLICITLY
makes proximate
- the prohibition of TEASING
- the requirement of 7th YEAR SABBATICAL
- OCCUPATION OF ISRAEL

It would follow that EXILE is a punishment for
TEASING(done maliciously).

This is my own personal novelty.

How can my personal contribution be reconciled
with the Talmudic observation that violation
of the 7th year sabbatical causes exile?

I would suggest that by observing the 7th
year sabbatical law we practice lack of
possession once in 7 years. This practice
in turn allows us not to be so clutchy
and possessive. And this tolerance
removes the need to tease.

So we see a beautiful development of ideas here
- violation of the sabbatical
- emphasis on absolute possesion
- teasing
- exile
