This is part 2 in a 4 part series on the GENERAL PARTICULAR GENERAL structure of lv25-02:07 The list below simply cites Verses Lv25-02:07 which speak about the sabbatical year requirements. However the list breaks out the verse phrases according to -- GENERAL THEMES (Sabbatical) -- DETAILS (No sowing, pruning, gathering leftovers, basketing) The sister verse in Ex23-11 is also cited From this list and its GENERAL-DETAIL-GENERAL style we infer many laws -- SABBATH TO EARTH BUT OK TO EAT: ------------------------------ So harvest-ownership is prohibited but gathering-eating is permitted -- PROHIBITION OF a) SOWING GATHERING and b) PLAIN GATHERING ------------------------------------------------ The contrast in the phrases (SECTIONS B1 B1a and B2 B2a)-- SOWING-GATHERING-LEFTOVER and PRUNING-BASKETING VINES-- shows us that BOTH a) sowing and harvesting is prohibited as well as b) harvesting leftovers (without sowing) -- FOOD PERMITTED TO RICH and POOR ------------------------------- Compare SECTIONS C and D which explicitly state this. Please see the sister LIST411c for a collection of all Rashis and what is learned

*1 All phrases from the verses are here. But they have been broken out into two columns. The GENERAL column uses the following phrases -- SABBATICAL TO LAND -- FOOD FOR YOU The DETAIL column uses the phrases -- No Sowing -- No pruning -- No gathering leftovers etc This contrast clearly shows us eg that the term SABBATICAL refers to abstention from GATHERING FOR HARVEST but GATHERING FOR FOOD IS OK *2 Note the exquisite delicate contrast of phrases-- - A1 says SOW 6 years - B1 says dont SOW on 7th year - B1a says dont GATHER LEFTOVERS The contrast of these 3 phrases clearly suggests that BOTH - SOWING AND GATHERING - PLAIN GATHERING (LEFTOVERS) (EVEN WITHOUT SOWING) BOTH of these are prohibited. Note how this nuance does not come from a picky emphasis on the word LEFTOVER (which would imply no sowing). Rather this nuance and inference naturally comes from the contrast of the 3 phrases. *3 Of course Ex23-11 (TO YOUR POOR) occurs in Exodus. If we combine Ex23-11 with Lv25-06 we see the overall structure--namely, this Sabbatical food can be used -- by the poor (Ex23-11) -- you (Lv25-06) -- animals (Lv25-07) -- servants -- laborers In short by anybody. Again this is a triumph of the GENERAL-DETAIL structure We could have also used the Rabbi Ishmael CONTRADICTION method *4 Note how the word YOUR is absent with BEASTS. This prompts a famous Rashi comment. But it uses a method (HEYKESH) which we havent really studied that much. Thus we leave this for a future digest

*10 Note the BULLET like effect created by the repetition of the word 6 YEARS - 6 YEARS you should sow - 6 YEARS you should prune This is following by particular examples of SOWING and PRUNING (GATHERING LEFTOVERS and BASKETING GRAPES) (See A1 B1 B1a vs A2 B2 B2a). The Rambam following the Talmud derives various laws In fact we have a GENERAL-DETAIL-GENERAL structure followed by a GENERAL-DETAIL structure. That is the GENERAL-DETAIL-GENERAL of SABBATH--NO PRUNING--SABBATH following the GENERAL-DETAIL structure of NO SOWING--NO GATHERING LEFTOVERS The Talmud delicately analyzes these two clashing styles. Since this is advanced Rashi left it out I also will not go into details but I do point it out since it stands out blatantly in the paragraph above. |
