SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis 5 main goals is to indicate paragraph
structure. One method of demonstrating paragraph structure
is to use the THEME-DEVELOPMENT-THEME style.

EXAMPLE Gn41-41:43
------------------
Gn41-41 Appointment on Egypt
Gn41-42a -------------------- Pharoh gave him ring
Gn41-42b -------------------- Dressed him in linen
Gn41-42c -------------------- Gold necklace on him
Gn41-43a -------------------- Ride in royal chariot
Gn41-43b -------------------- Call him:Man of Blessing
Gn41-43 Appoint him on Egypt

Here the general THEME of appointment over Egypt
is DEVELOPED with 5 specific items done to appointees:
- (Giving the royal ring, riding in the royal carriage
etc.).

The paragraph structure is CLEARLY SHOWN by the
THEME-DEVELOPMENT-THEME form. Once we RECOGNIZE
the paragraph structure we are JUSTIFIED in
interpreting the 5 specific items as THINGS DONE
TO APPOINTEES (Rashi).

COMMENTS
*1 The paragraph illustrates the THEME-DEVELOPMENT-THEME
method. The general THEME is the APPOINTMENT OF JOSEPH
This THEME is DEVELOPED with 5 items done to appointees
(eg royal ring, dressing in linen, riding in Royal
chariot)

It is this paragraph structure which justifies our
interpreting these 5 items as THINGS OF DISTINCTION
DONE TO KINGS.

*2 Rashi calls this the SECOND CHARIOT of the King.
But a more natural translation (consistent with
Rashi!) would be the chariot of the 2nd in command
(The vice presidents chariot)

*3 We have discussed the etymology of this word at
http://www.Rashiyomi.com/gn41-43b.htm.
