Ex18-01f (C) Dr Hendel, Jan-04
|
SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis 5 main goals is to indicate paragraph
structure. One method of demonstrating paragraph
structure is to use the DETAIL-THEME style. Another
method is to CLIMATICALLY build up a theme.
EXAMPLE Ex18-01f
------------------
- All (DETAILS) the things God did to Jews
- --------------------------------------- The Exodus
EXAMPLE Ex18-09b
----------------
- All (DETAILS) the good God did to Jews
- -------------------------------------- The Exodus
Thus the EXODUS is the THEME which had many details
such as a) Splitting of sea, b) Receipt of Torah,
c) Provision of Manna, d) Defeat of Amalek*1`
Ex18-06a
--------
Come home
- Your IN-LAW is paying a social call
- ALSO - your WIFE wants you
- ALSO - your LITTLE CHILDREN need you
Here the climax is in terms of need. Your in law only
needs a social visit. Your wife needs you physically.
Your children need a parent figure.

COMMENTS
|
*1 There are famous commentaries on various versions of
Rashi--some of which only mention SOME of the Exodus
miracles. These commentaries then seek to explain
why certain miracles (Manna, Amalek, Red sea, Torah)
are mentioned while others are omitted. This is an
interesting exercise but the MAIN POINT OF RASHI is
that the UNIFYING theme to all the miracles is the
Exodus.
