SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- A powerful Rashi technique is the ALIGNMENT method in which almost similar verses are aligned. The minor differences between the aligned phrases sheds light on nuances and details. EXAMPLE Nu01-03 Nu03-15 ----------------------- - Count the Israelites all male 20 yr olds going out in army - Count the Levites all male 1 month olds -------------- As can be seen one verse provides a REASON for the 20 year old requirement (Army men) while the 2nd verse provides no reason. This ALIGNMENT suggests that there is a reason for counting only 1 month olds and above--after a month you can be certain of the infants viability. | ||

*1 Nu01-03 uses the word SeU while Nu03-15 uses the word PeKoD Both these words mean COUNT. I dont know a reason for the difference *2 Nu01-03 refers to a census of Israelites while Nu03-15a refers to a census of the Levites *3 The order is different in the two verses--(One verse states BY FATHERS HOUSEHOLD, BY FAMILY while the other verse states BY FAMILY, BY FATHERS HOUSEHOLD). I dont know a reason for the difference *4 Census only applies to males *5 The ISRAELITE census starts at 20 while the LEVITE census starts at 1 month *6 Only Nu01-03 gives a reason for the minimum age requirement: Israelites should be 20 years old since that is the age people enter the army. The alignment suggests by analogy that the mimimum age requirement in Nu03-15a -- one month -- should also have a reason. Rashi gives the obvious reason: -- one month is the minimum age of viability. After an infant lives for a month we can be sure of its viability. |
