VERSE: Gn30-37e
RASHIS COVERED: Gn30-37e Gn30-37b
Gn30-35b
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-04

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
Rashi frequently makes powerful inferences from the alignment
of ALMOST similar verses. The minor variations between these
almost similar verses suggests nuances and differences or
even meaning.

EXAMPLE Is47-02
---------------
- UNCOVER your FARHEAD
- X$P---- your LEGS
- UNCOVER your THIGHS
cross the river

From the alignment we infer that the Hebrew root X$P means
EXPOSE or UNCOVER (Rashi: Gn30-37e)

EXAMPLE Gn30-37b
----------------
- Jacob TOOK------- a branch
- Jacob PCLed------ white PCLs
- Jacob EXPOSED the white of the branches

From the alignment we infer that the Hebrew root PCL means
TO PEAL. Thus
- the verb form is TO PEEL
- the noun form is PEELS

Note that the Hebrew root PCL only incurs in this verse and
therefore the only method of inferring its meaning is from
alignment.

Note also that our use of ALIGNMENT to infer meaning
corresponds to the Rabbi Ishmael rule of INFERRENCE FROM CONTEXT
In this case we have explained HOW INFERENCE FROM CONTEXT
is made--inference from context is made by alignment.

PHRASE WHO ACT OBJECT
PHRASE1 Jacob TOOK------- a branch
PHRASE2 Jacob PCLed------ white PCLs
PHRASE3 Jacob EXPOSED the white of the branches
Differs *1 *2 *3
COMMENTS
*1 Same in all phrases

*2 From the alignment we infer that PCL means TO PEEL
- PCLed*10 = verb form = TO PEEL
- PCLs*10 = noun form = PEELs

*3 These supplementary phrases support the contention
that Jacob PEELED the branches EXPOSING their white bark

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 We are of course mixing Hebrew and English here.
- The ED in PCLed is simply a way of indicating a verb form
- the S in PCLs is simply a away of indicating a noun form

The actual Hebrew is WIPCL-vs PCLed and PCLWT vs PCLs
