GOALS
=====
This module studies the ALIGNMENT method in Rashi. In this
method 2 different verses are found to be ALMOST the same.
The verses are lined up and the minor differences between
them function as footnotes illuminating the text.
TODAYS UNIT
===========
In todays unit we review the alignment
--of 4 verses where Abraham called People to God
--the verbs used in a chapter describing Abrahams hospitality

ALIGNMENT OF TWO VERSES ON A WATER SHORTAGE: #1 |
EXAMPLE 26: Nu20-08a
BACKGROUND
----------
There were several water shortages that the Jews experienced
as they went thru the wilderness. The Jews frequently
complained about lack of water. We compare two such incidents
below
THE TEXT
--------
Normally we would not be picky on words. However the
principle of alignment allows one to infer nuances from
individual words when they are the only differences in
two otherwise identical verses.
In this case we see that THIRST is mentioned in one
drought but not the other. This difference is fundamental
It is elaborated on in DIFFERENCE & footnote *2 below
THE RASHI
---------
Rashi concludes that one drought was a drought of THIRST:
There was danger to life. By contrast the other drought
was simply loss of a water source without (immediate
danger to life). Each drought had different responses
by God.
A MORAL LESSON
--------------
From the fact that God responded to BOTH droughts, the
one where life was in danger and the one where livestock
might die but not people, we infer that God cares not only
about Jewish life but also about Jewish wealth.
Here is the list |
VERSE | PHRASE 1 | PHRASE 2 | PHRASE 3 |
Nu20-04 | we ---*1--- | & animals | will die ---*3-- |
Ex17-03 | we,the children | & animals | will die of thirst |
DIFFERS | *1 | *2 | *3 |
| | | |
COMMENTS |
*1 As noted in the introduction the fundamental difference
between Nu20-04 and Ex17-03 is found in footnote *3
In Ex17-03 there was an element of THIRST - the drought
was intense while in Nu20-04 there was only loss of a
water source (that might kill animals but not people)
Hence in Ex17-03 there is concern about the children
While in Nu20-04 the children are not mentioned (Since
the water could be diverted from animals to people)
*2 These phrases are the same
*3 This is the fundamental difference between these two
chapters. In Ex17-03 there is an emphasis on thirst:
There was concern that people would die. By contrast in
Nu20-04 there is an emphasis on a water loss: If worse
comes to worse the water for animals will be diverted to
humans and only some cattle will die.
http://www.RashiYomi.Com/nu20-01b.htm presents an
alternative defense based on juxtaposition of Chapters
to show that only a water source was lost in Nu20-01b

ALIGNMENT OF TWO VERSES ON A WATER SHORTAGE: #1 |
Continuation of the previous example
|
VERES | PHRASE 1 | PHRASE 2 | PHRASE 3 |
Nu20-08 | -*4- Rock | will give | its water |
Ex17-06 | From Rock | will come | *4 water |
DIFFERS | *4 | *4 | *4 |
| | | |
COMMENTS |
*4
As noted in the introduction the fundamental difference
between Nu20-04 and Ex17-03 is found in footnote *3
In Ex17-03 there was an element of THIRST - the drought
was intense while in Nu20-04 there was only loss of a
water source (that might kill animals but not people)
Hence I would suggest that the Remedy in each situation
was different. In Ex17-06 Moses was told if necessary
--to use violence
--to take by force FROM rock
--and MAKE water come forth
By contrast in Nu20-08 the Jews only needed an alternative
water source. Possibly there was a hidden spring below
the rock. Hence
--the rock would GIVE ITS water
--hitting rock was not necessary.
