GOALS
=====
This module studies the ALIGNMENT method in Rashi. In this
method 2 different verses are found to be ALMOST the same.
The verses are lined up and the minor differences between
them function as footnotes illuminating the text.
TODAYS UNIT
===========
In todays unit we review the alignment
of verses on trumpet blasts. We find some trumpet
blasts are used to signal a move while others
are used to signal a gathering
REFERENCE:

Todays unit comes from the following posting

ALIGNMENT OF VERSES ON USE OF TRUMPETS |
EXAMPLE 27: Nu10-03a One blast on 2 trumpets gathers the nation
EXAMPLE 28: Nu10-03b One blast on 2 trumpets gathers the nation
EXAMPLE 29: Nu10-04a One blast on 1 trumpet- gathers the elders
EXAMPLE 30: Nu10-04b One blast on 1 trumpet- gathers the elders
EXAMPLE 31: Nu10-05a A Blast-Stacattor-Blast signals a move
BACKGROUND
----------
There were 600,000 Jews in the desert. They needed signals
to tell them when to move, when to gather, when the leaders
should gather etc
THE TEXT
--------
The Biblical text Nu10-03:05 gives three different
types of trumpet blasts corresponding to 3 different functions
--TO GATHER leaders--------------1 Blast on 1 trumpet
--TO GATHER nation---------------1 Blast on 2 Trumpets
--to JOURNEY nation--------------Use a BLAST-STACATTO-BLAST
THE RASHI
---------
While the verses more or less say the above, Rashi GUIDES
us thru the verses and shows us how each Biblical phrase
corresponds to some component of the above rule. This
guidance is facilitated by the LIST.
Here is the list |
VERSE | PHRASE1 | PHRASE2 | PHRASE3 | PHRASE4 | <
|
Nu10-03 | IF you blast | | in both | THEN the nation | gathers<
|
Nu10-04 | IF you blast | | in one | THEN the leaders | gathers<
|
Nu10-05 | IF you blast | a stacatto | | THEN the nation | moves
|
Differs | *1 | *2 | *3 | *4 | *5 |
| | | | | |
COMMENTS |
*1 These verses are all the same
*2 So BLASTING A STACATTO is a signal for the NATION TO MOVE
In the main posting (URLS above) we show that
- the Biblical phrase BLAST refers to a LONG BLAST
- the Biblical phrase BLASTING A STACATTO refers to a
------ LONG blast
------ followed by a STACATTO blast(Like a machine gun)
------ followed by a LONG blast
This is known as TRT (Tkiah, Truah, Tkiah)
This analysis is based on the Malbim who brilliantly showed
that there are 3 Biblical phrases for trumpet blowing
---BLAST (TEKATEM)
---BLAST A STACCATTO (TEKATEM TERUAH)
---STACCATTO (TERUAH)
Verses justifying this are brought in the main posting.
We also use Shenkerian musical analysis to explain the
translation of the Biblical phrase BLAST A STACCATTO
to refer to the sequence BLAST, STACCATTO, BLAST (tekiah,
teruah, tekiah) This brief summary will suffice here
*3 -A blast on TWO TRUMPETS leads to GATHERING of the NATION
-A blast on ONE TRUMPTET leads to GATHERING of the LEADERS
*4 -A blast on TWO TRUMPETS leads to GATHERING of the NATION
-A blast on ONE TRUMPTET leads to GATHERING of the LEADERS
*5 -An ORDINARY BLAST leads to GATHERINGS (of nation/leaders)
-A STACATTO BLAST leads to A NEW JOURNEY (of nation)
