GOALS
=====
This module studies the ALIGNMENT method in Rashi. In this
method 2 different verses are found to be ALMOST the same.
The verses are lined up and the minor differences between
them function as footnotes illuminating the text.
TODAYS UNIT
===========
In todays unit we compare 11 verses that mention the
phrase FINGER OF THE LIVER in the sacrifices. Yet
this simple phrase occurs in 3 forms!!!!
ALL UNITS IN THIS SERIES WILL BE POSTED IN HTML FORMAT
TO PRESERVE ALIGNMENT. Please read the HTML version if
you dont have FIXED WIDTH FONTS.

ALIGNMENT OF 11 VERSES MENTIONING LIVER FINGER |
EXAMPLE 2: Lv08-16a FINGER of/from/on THE LIVER
EXAMPLE 3: Ex29-13b FINGER of/from/on THE LIVER
In 11 verses, the Torah requests that the
----------------------------------------------------------
Finger of the liver of a sacrifice be offered on the altar
----------------------------------------------------------
However 3 different phrases are used to describe the FINGER OF
THE LIVER. The list BELOW with footnotes explains how these
3 verses combine to indicate various laws
|
VERSE | PHRASE1 | PHRASE2 | PHRASE3 | Explanation of PHRASE2 |
Lv09-10 | the finger | FROM | the liver | Protrusion FROM liver |
Ex29-22 | the finger | OF | the liver | where liver/finger meet |
Lv03-04 | the finger | ON | the liver | Finger+little bit of liver |
Differs | | *1 | | |
| | | | |
COMMENTS |
*1 We now further clarify the differences.
-------------------------------------------------------------
The word FROM implies AT LEAST take the protrusion FROM liver
The word OF implies dont take MORE than the protrusion
The word ON implies I should take a tiny little bit of liver
------------------------------------------------------------
A side picture might clarify In this picture we
--represent the FINGER by SINGLE DASHED LINES----
--represent the LIVER by DOUBLE DASHED LINES====
--represent the CONNECTION by a circle o

I have marked the positions of the finger and liver
by x,y,z.The law states that we take all the X and the Y but
not the Z.
-----------------------------------------------------------
---The X correspond to what comes FROM the liver
---the Z corresponds to taking OF the liver but not WITH it
---the Y corresponds to taking what is ON the liver
-----------------------------------------------------------
In the main posting all 11 verses with the phrase
FINGER OF THE LIVER are indicated
