GOALS
=====
This module studies the ALIGNMENT method in Rashi. In this
method 2 different verses are found to be ALMOST the same.
The verses are lined up and the minor differences between
them function as footnotes illuminating the text.

TODAYS UNIT
===========
In todays unit we align 3 verses discussing the GAD
plan (to inherit the transjordan but first fight for
Israel)

Alignment of 3 accounts of Moses-Gad dialog

EXAMPLE 49: Nu32-16a
EXAMPLE 50: Nu32-25a

BACKGROUND (Nu32)
----------
The Gadites were impressed with the Transjordan territory
that Israel had recently conquered. This territory was exactly
what shepards needed. The Gadites came forth with the GAD PLAN:

- The Gadites (with Reuben & part of Menasheh)
would inherit transjordan
- The Gadites would first however help the remaining Jews
conquer Israel
- The Gadites would build cities to watch their families and
herds during the war of conquest until they return

THE TEXT
--------
The GAD plan is presented 3 times
--An initial offer in Nu32-16 by Gad to Moses
--An initial response by Moses to Gad in Nu32-24
--An final offer in Nu32-26 by Gad to Moses

THE RASHIS
----------
The 3 accounts of the Gad plans have some subtle differences
Rashi focuses on the main difference which is ORDER. GAD
mentions that they will build cities for their SHEEP & CHILDREN
Moses rebukes them and asks them to build cities for their
CHILDREN SHEEP. The nuance in the order should be obvious.

Here is the LIST of GAD plans*5

COMMENTS

*1 Verses 16,26 were said by the GADITES.
Verse 24 was said by Moses
--Verse 16 was the INITIAL offer of the Gadites
--Verse 24 was the INITIAL response by Moses
--Verse 26 was the final offer of the Gadites

*2 There are rules for how the subject of a Group is indicated:
--If the group acts as a unit under one leader then the
SINGULAR is used: e.g. I, GAD WILL BUILD FOR MY CHILDREN
--If however the group acts as a group without unified
leadership then the plural is used: e.g. WE (GAD) WILL BUILD

   Now we understand the differences
--When they first came to Moses there were different factions
in the Gadites--they couldnt agree--but the majority wanted
     the transjordan
--After Moses had accepted their offer (conditional to their
first fighting for Israel), they formed a group with a
leadership and said I, GAD, WILL BUILD

*3 These verses are all the same

*4 Rashi (and anyone else) immediately sees the obvious here
--Gad initially said we will watch our SHEEP & CHILDREN
By putting BUSINESS (SHEEP) before FAMILY (CHILDREN)
     they showed an improper attitude
--Moses DISCRETELY REBUKED THEM: Moses asked them to
take care of their FAMILY & SHEEP(Note: The order
     reversal)
--GAD then accepted the rebuke: Beside preserving
the right order they gave more details
I GAD WILL BUILD CITIES FOR MY CHILDREN, WIFE, SHEEP
     AND HERDS

*5 Note: The actual Biblical sentences are longer. We have
curtailed the actual sentences in order to compactly
display all differences on one line.

The more interested reader is invited to peruse the actual
verses. Here is an example of how we curtailed the text
   ---------------------------------------------------------
   ACTUAL TEXT
   -----------
And they (The GADites) came forward and said: WE WILL
BUILD herd-pens FOR OUR SHEEP here and cities for our
   CHILDREN
   ----------------------------------------------------------

We abbreviate the above by using the capped words. Note
that no essential information is lost
