GOALS
=====
This module studies the ALIGNMENT method in Rashi. In this
method 2 different verses are found to be ALMOST the same.
The verses are lined up and the minor differences between
them function as footnotes illuminating the text.
TODAYS UNIT
===========
In todays unit we align 4 Biblical paragraphs
dealing with holidays.
REFERENCE:
=========
Todays unit comes from the following posting

Alignment of 3 Chapters on Biblical Holidays |
EXAMPLE 52: Nu29-06a On New Year we bring the NEW-MOON offering
EXAMPLE 53: Nu29-11a On Yom Kippur we also bring ATONE offerings
EXAMPLE 54: Nu29-11b On Yom Kippur we also bring DAILY offering
BACKGROUND
----------
Nu29 lists the offerings brought on 8 special days.
--The Daily Offering (Brought every day)
--The Shabbath Offering brought on Shabbath
--The New Month Offering (brought on New Moon)
--The Passover offering brought on Passover
--The Shavuoth Offering
--The New Year Offering
--The Yom Kippur Offering
--The Succoth offering
THE TEXT
--------
Each holiday has the following extra phrase
---------------------------------------------------------------
YOU SHALL BRING THE HOLIDAY OFFERING besides THE DAILY OFFERING
---------------------------------------------------------------
In other words: On e.g. Passover we bring two offerings:
--the Daily Daily-Offering
--the Special Passover offering
THE RASHI
----------
When aligning 4 of these holidays we notice that two of them
have extra phrases. Rashi is Simple: The 2 extra phrases
correspond to THREE sacrifices that have to be brought on
certain holidays. For example: Jewish New Year is ALSO a day
and is ALSO a New Month (the year begins on the 1st of the
month): And Hence we bring on Rosh Hashanah BOTH a DAILY
OFFERING, A NEW MONTH OFFERING as well as a NEW YEAR OFFERING
Here is the LIST of 4 Holidays |
VERSE | PHRASE1 | PHRASE2 | PHRASE3 | PHRASE4 |
Nu28-23 | Besides | | the daily offering | .. do these |
Nu28-31 | Besides | | the daily offering | .. do these |
Nu29-06 | Besides | the new moon | & the daily offering | |
Nu29-11 | Besides | the YomKipur | & the daily offering | |
Differs | *1 | *2 | *1 | *3 |

COMMENTS |
*1 These phrases are the same
*2 Why is THE NEW MOON and THE YOM KIPPUR offering
mentioned in Nu29-06 and Nu29-11
On Passover(Nu28-23) and Shavuoth(Nu28-31) there is only
one extra sacrifice in addition to the holiday sacrifice
--they daily offering is extra
so that is the only other sacrifice mentioned
But on Yom Kippur and Jewish New Year there are 2 other
sacrifices that have to be brought.
On Rosh Hashana the following 2 sacrifices are extra
--the daily sacrifice is extra and
--the new moon sacrifice is extra on Jewish New Year
On Yom Kippur the following 2 other sacrifices are extra
--the daily sacrifice is extra and
--the YomKippur atonement sacrifices (Since Yom Kippur
has its own set of sacrifices mentioned in Lv17)
So Rashi is Simple--the holidays with 2 extra sacrifices
to be brought have two extra sacrifices mentioned.
*3 Rashi simply points out that the phrase "do these also"
is elliptically left out of the bottom two verses.
No reason is given by Rashi why this phrase is left out
nor do I know of any.
