COMPARISON OF REFERENTS TO GOD

BACKGROUND
----------
The text discusses Abrahams request to Eliezer his servant to
find a WIFE for Abrahams son, Isaac. In the course of the
dialogue God is referred to 3 times in 3 different ways

THE TEXT
--------
God is called LORD OF HEAVEN, LORD OF HEAVEN & EARTH, or the
LORD WHOM I HAVE SERVED

THE RASHI
---------
The ALIGNMENT shows an emphasis on omitted words. Rashi
explains this emphasis consistent with what we know about
Abraham. Before Abraham only spiritual people would worship
God(GOD OF HEAVENLY PEOPLE). Abraham encouraged the the
physical people to speak about God (GOD OF EARTHLY PEOPLE)

COMMENTS

*1 The 3 verses are as follows
   - Abraham asks Eliezer to seek a wife for his son Isaac
   - Abraham answers Eliezer who asks SUPPOSE I CANT FOUND A WIFE
   - Eliezer repeats Abrahams request to Laban

*2 (This comes from Rav Hirsch, not from Rashi). We bring the
   Rav Hirsch to explain the 3rd item in the list). Why didnt
   Eliezer refer to Abraham as the LORD OF HEAVEN. Why did
   Eliezer use the phrase THE GOD I HAVE SERVED.

   Rav Hirsch suggests that Elizer did not want to be
   confrontational. (See footnote #3). If Eliezer said
   LORD OF HEAVEN he would make Abraham sound SPIRITUAL but
   not physical (Not a good way to ask for a marriage) If
   Eliezer had said LORD OF EARTH he would emphasize the
   physical non spiritual nature of his hosts! So Eliezer
   chose the non-confrontational GOD I HAD SERVED

*3 Before Abraham came only religious people spoke about God
   We could say that GOD WAS ONLY KNOWN TO THE HEAVENLY PEOPLE

   Abraham encouraged non-religious people to speak about God
   Hence we could say that GOD KNOWN TO BOTH THE HEAVENLY &
   EARTHLY PEOPLE

   Hence when Abraham makes Eliezer swear he does so in the name
   of the God of both the spiritual people (Heaven) and the
   physical people(Earth) since Abraham was sending him to
   physical people (Rashi on Gn24-07a)
