GOALS
=====
This module studies the ALIGNMENT method in Rashi. In this
method 2 different verses are found to be ALMOST the same.
The verses are lined up and the minor differences between
them function as footnotes illuminating the text.

TODAYS UNIT
===========
In todays unit we review two almost identical idolatry
prohibitions from the 10 commandments. Similarly we review
two statements of punishment for people who sacrifice their
children to Molech.

ALIGNMENT OF TWO VERSES ON IDOLATRY

EXAMPLE 8: Ex20-03a Dont POSSESS idols;(& also) Dont MAKE idols

The two idolatry prohibitions below differ in one basic word
Let us see how Rashi treats this different phrasing
VERSEPHRASE1PHRASE2PHRASE 3
Ex20-03DontPOSSESSthe gods of others
Ex20-04DontMAKEidols
Differs*1*2*3
COMMENTS

*1 The two phrases are the same
*2 From the two words used, Rashi infers that there are two
idolatry prohibitions. It is prohibited to
   ----PRODUCE an idol
----POSSESS an idol (that someone else produced)

*3 Rashi does not comment on the difference. It is reasonable
however to combine differences *2 and *3. That is
   ----------------------------------------------------
Dont possess the gods (EVEN IF) made by others

TWO VERSES ON PUNISHMENT FOR CHILD SACRIFICE

EXAMPLE 9: Lv20-05a Punishment for ACTUAL child sacrificer
EXAMPLE 10:Lv20-05b Punishment for FAMILY of child sacrificer

BACKGROUND
----------
The Bible is discussing people who put their children thru
fire -- an ancient form of worship called MOLECH.

This punishment carries a severe penalty. The Bible mentions
punishment twice. Let us review the different phraseology.
In the LIST below the word HIM refers to the person who
actually passed the child thru the fire while the word I
refers to God.
VERSEPHRASE1PHRASE2PHRASE3
Lv20-05I(God) willplace my face against him& his family
Lv20-05I(God) willcut off him& his followers
Differs*1*2*3
COMMENTS

*1 This phrase is the same in both verses

*2 Two different possible punishments are mentioned
---God PLACING HIS FACE against someone (A sign of anger)
---God CUTTING OFF the person from eternal life(i.e. hell)
We observe that CUTTING OFF is the more severe punishment

*3 Recall from footnote #2 that there are two punishments
--CUT OFF (i.e. HELL), a severe punishment
--PLACING OF GODS FACE against person, (i.e. severe anger)

Phrase3 indicates WHO is being punished with WHAT
---The child sacrificer receives BOTH punishments(HELL,ANGER)
---The family of the child sacrificer only receives ANGER

Rashi explains this intuitively: The family should have
protested what the sacrificer was doing; since they didnt
do this God is angry but there is no death penalty.

Note the word FOLLOWERS in phrase3. They also receive cutoff.
An example could be if one person burned his children & then
encouraged other people to burn their children. We then have
---the instigator; He receives HELL and there is ANGER
---the followers; They receive HELL even though they followed
---the families; they should have protested;God is only ANGRY

(In passing we note a contrast that if someone instigates a
whole city to worship idols then the city is punished by the
less severe death penalty of DEATH BY SWORD while the
instigator is punished with the more severe death penalty of
DEATH BY STONING. By contrast with child burning both the
instigator and followers receive the same death penalty)
