GOALS
=====
This module studies the ALIGNMENT method in Rashi. In this
method 2 different verses are found to be ALMOST the same.
The verses are lined up and the minor differences between
them function as footnotes illuminating the text.

TODAYS UNIT
===========
In todays module we align 2 verses on Rivkah drawing
water. In the process we show how a difficult Midrash
can be made simple.

ALIGNMENT OF 2 DESCRIPTIONS OF DRAWING WATER

EXAMPLE 87: Gn24-17a

BACKGROUND
----------
Recall that Eliezer, Abrahams servant, went to obtain a wife
for Isaac, Abrahams son. The Bible describes how Eliezer
met this wife. The Bible also recounts Eliezers account of how
he met her. Eliezer was particularly impressed that Rivkah
drew water and fed his animals.

THE TEXT
--------
Hence, Gn24 has two accounts of the same events
- THe Bibles narrative of Eliezer Finding Rivkah
- Eliezers account of Eliezer finding RIvkah

THE RASHI
---------
Rashi aligns the two texts and mentions a weird
Agaddah that THE WATER OF THE WELL SPRUNG UP FOR
RIVKAH. We will give a simple explanation of this
below

THE LIST
--------
Here is the list.
VERSEPHRASE1PHRASE2
Gn24-16She went down to the wellFilled her bucket & went up
Gn24-45She went down to the welldrew water

COMMENTS

*1 These phrases are identical

*2 A simple suggestion of the difference between
   ------------------------------
FILLED HER BUCKET & WENT UP
   ------------------------------
   vs
   -----------------------
   DREW WATER
   -----------------------

   is that
   - she drew ONCE and her bucket was FILLED vs
   - she continuously drew SEVERAL times because the well did
     not have that much water.

In other words the emphasis in FILLED HER BUCKET and WENT UP
is she filled her bucket on the FIRST attempt and
IMMEDIATELY went up. This emphasis in turn is justified by
   the ALIGNMENT.

Once we understand this, it is easy to understand the Agaddah
that THE WATER OF THE WELL SPRUNG UP FOR HER. This of course
is not to be explained literally. It simply means that the
water was there at the bottom of the well and she didnt
   have to wait around.

In passing Rav Hirsch explains WHY the phrases are different
   - Eliezer was impressed that Rivkah KNEW when/where the well
is full This confirmed his suspicions that Rivkah was Isaacs
     wife

   - Eliezer did not want to sound like a believer in
coincidences/miracles before her father. He simply
instead emphasized Abrahams riches and family ties.
