GOALS
=====
This module studies the ALIGNMENT method in Rashi. In this
method 2 different verses are found to be ALMOST the same.
The verses are lined up and the minor differences between
them function as footnotes illuminating the text.
TODAYS UNIT
===========
In todays module we align Jacobs vs Esauvs request for
a blessing. We also have the opportunity to clarify a
queer Rashi that seems to distort a verse from its
simple meaning.
REFERENCE:

Todays unit comes from the following posting

#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) RashiYomi, 2001 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*
COMPARISON OF JACOB & ESAUVS REQUEST |
EXAMPLE 87: Gn27-19a Jacob was humble; Esauv was demanding
EXAMPLE 88: Gn27-22a Jacob was polite (used PLEASE);Esauv wasnt
EXAMPLE 89: Gn22-24a Jacob was humble; Esauv was demanding
EXAMPLE 90: Gn27-19b The Hebrew word SHVA means to DINE
BACKGROUND:
----------
Isaac, the patriarch, has asked his son Esauv to prepare
a meal for him during which Isaac would give Esauv a
blessing. Rivkah, wanted to show Isaac that he had been
fooled his whole life by externals. So she asked Jacob to
disguise himself as Esauv. Jacob would bring the meal and
get blessed. Then, when Isaac found out he would understand
that he judged people by externals instead of their content
THE TEXT
--------
We have Jacobs statement that he prepared food and his request
for a blessing. We also have Esauvs statement that he prepared
food his request for a blessing. The two passages show
differences in nuances which shed light on the personalities
of Jacob vs Esauv
THE RASHI
---------
Rashi simply points out
* Jacob was polite while Esauv was not
* Jacob was modest while Esauv emphasized titles & was demanding
THE LIST
--------
Here is the list
|
VERSE | PHRASE1 | PHRASE2 | PHRASE3 | PHRASE4 |
Gn27-19 | Im Esauv | | your eldest | I did as asked |
Gn27-32 | Im Esauv | your son | your eldest | |
Differs | *1 | *2 | *2 | *3 |
| | | | |
COMMENTS |
*1 These phrases are the same
*2 There is a further difference of order (not shown in the
above list).Jacob said IM ESAUV THE ELDEST while Esau said
IM THE ELDEST ESAUV.
- Esauv by his emphasis on YOUR SON and ELDEST shows
pushiness and an emphasis on titles (I deserve a blessing)
- Jacob simply says I AM MYSELF
I think this explains Rashi who says
------------------------------------
I AM MYSELF but ESAUV IS YOUR ELDEST
------------------------------------
Some interpret Rashi to mean that Jacob was not lying. That
the sentence I AM ESAUV YOUR ELDEST could be punctuated as
2 sentences: I AM. ESAUV IS YOUR ELDEST.But this is
contrived and rediculous.
But I suggest that Rashi was not commenting on whether
Jacob was lying; RATHER RASHI WAS COMMENTING ON THE
DIFFERENCES FOUND IN THE ABOVE ALIGNMENT
Rashi is commenting on the WORD ORDER (ESAUV YOUR
ELDEST vs YOUR ELDEST ESAUV)and the extra phrase I AM YOUR
SON (Said by Esauv vs Jacob).Rashi is explaining that
----------------------------------------
- Jacobs statement shows he is himself
- Esauvs statement sought titles
----------------------------------------
*3 - Jacob emphasized he was acting BECAUSE his father asked him
- Esauv did not so emphasize. Esauvs request
----------------------------------
get up and eat so you can bless me
----------------------------------
shows a confrontational demanding stance
|
ALIGNMENT OF 2 REQUESTS FOR BLESSINGS |
Continuation of the above list |
VERSE | PHRASE1 | PHRASE2 | PHRASE3 | |
Gn27-19 | Please | get up | & dine | & eat from my food |
Gn27-32 | | get up FATHER | | & eat from your SONS food |
Differs | *4 | *5 | *4 | *5 |
| | | | |
COMMENTS |
*4 (Rashi) Jacob used PLEASE. Esauv did not.(So Jacob was polite)
(Rashi) Jacob said DINE & EAT. Esauv just said EAT. Again
Jacob emerges as a politer person
*5 Note how Esauvs request uses the words FATHER-SON which
is absent from Jacobs request. As we showed in footnote #2
- Jacob was modest and himself
- Esauv was confrontational and demanding. He emphasized
structure (FATHER-SON-ELDEST) rather than personal worth
He demanded the blessing as something coming to him
because he was the eldest

Continuation of the above list |
VERSE | PHRASE1 |
Gn27-19 | So that you can bless me |
Gn27-32 | So that you can bless me |
