GOALS
=====
This module studies the ALIGNMENT method in Rashi. In this
method 2 different verses are found to be ALMOST the same.
The verses are lined up and the minor differences between
them function as footnotes illuminating the text.
TODAYS UNIT
===========
In todays module we align 2 descriptions of Rachels
burial. From the differences,Rashi infers many ideas.

ALIGNMENT OF 2 DESCRIPTIONS OF RACHELS BURIAL |
EXAMPLE 97: Gn35-16a THE MEASURE refers to a standard measure
EXAMPLE 98: Gn48-07b THE MEASURE refers to a standard measure
EXAMPLE 99: Gn48-07c I personally buried Rachel
EXAMPLE 100: Gn44-13b A HEY ending indicates OUTSKIRTS of city
BACKGROUND
----------
The Bible describes (Twice) how Rachel died in the
childbirth of Benjamin which happened near the city
of Beth-Lechem and she was buried there.
THE TEXT
--------
The texts are almost identical except for 2-3 subtle
differences. E.g. I BURIED HER IN EPHRATH vs
I BURIED HER ON THE ROAD TO EPHRATH
THE RASHI
---------
Rashi infers 3 main ideas (which are totally defended
in the footnotes below). Here is a summary
- Rachel died about a MIL from Beth Lechem (note #2)
- Jacob PERSONALLY buried her (note #4)
- Rachel was buried on the city outskirts (note #5)
THE LIST
--------
Here is the list. Notice how the list makes reasonable
many conjecturable statements in Rashi. The alignment
of these two verses seems to be explicitly suggested
by the Ramban. Thus this makes an excellent study in Rashi

VERSE | PHRASE1 | #2 | PHRASE3 |
Gn35-16 | there was still | THE | measure of land to Ephrath-Outskirts |
Gn48-07 | there was still | A | measure of land to Ephrath-Outskirts |
Differs | *1 | *2 | *3 |
| | | |
COMMENTS |
*1 These phrases are the same
*2 The phrase THE MEASURE OF LAND vs A MEASURE OF LAND indicates
it was a standard measure of land such as a mile, EVERYONE
agrees on this but there is a 5 way controversy on WHICH
standard measure of land it was
-It could refer to a STANDARD distance- 1 mil
(Rashi, Rav Moshe HaDarshan)
-It refers to a BIG distance (CBR means ALOT)
-The measure of land that can be plowed in one day(Oonkelos)
-(Radack) 4 Mil: Amount you can walk from Dawn to breakfast
Radack derives this from BRH (to eat)
-Amount of land that is typically well plowed (Midrash Rabbah
derives this from CBRH=Seive).
It is arguable that some of these 5 opinions agree. Bottom
line however is that it refers to a standard measure and
this is inferred from use of THE MEASURE of land vs A MEASURE
*3 These phrases are the same

ALIGNMENT OF 2 DESCRIPTIONS OF RACHELS BURIAL =#2 |
Continuation of above list |
VERSE | PHRASE4 | PHRASE5 |
Gn35-19 | & SHE was buried | ----- on the Eprhath-OUTSKIRTS-Road |
Gn48-07 | & I buried her | there, on the Ephrath-Road |
Differs | *4 | *5 |
| | |
| | |
COMMENTS |
*4 I BURIED HER vs SHE WAS BURIED emphasizes the I---
I Jacob personally buried her.
Rashi suggests that Jacob buried her under Prophetic order
Rashi uses 3 facts to support this idea
-------------------------------------------------------------
-- Jacob PERSONALLY buried her (She was buried vs I buried)
-- He buried her on the OUTSKIRTS of the city (footnote #5)
-- He buried her a mile or so from the city(See footnote #2)
-------------------------------------------------------------
Rashi then explains the reason for the prophetic order:
-----------------------------------------------------------
Rachel was the symbol of exile (e.g. She was robbed of her
wedding night, had difficulty having children, was cursed
by her husband, died in childbirth...). Similarly the open
roads or city outskirts are the hangouts of vulnerable people
So it is REASONABLE to conclude that Jacob was ordered to
bury Rachel on the outskirts to be a symbol for the exiles
who have no homes and hang out on the open roads. They would
come to Rachels grave and because they could emphathize with
her would pray there and be encouraged to continue
-----------------------------------------------------------
*5 The burial place is called both EPHRATH and EPRHATH-OUTSKITS
A simple explanation is that Jacob buried her in the
EPRHATH-OUTSKIRTS. But the city later expanded so that
what was the outskirts became part of the city.
There are 3 reasons for interpreting this as city outskirts
- Rashi on Gn44-13b explains that when you add a terminal
HEY to a city name you refer to its outskirts
- The Ramban points out the repetitiveness
-------------------------------------------------------
She died in EPHRATH::I buried her THERE: in EPHRATH
(It could have just said SHE DIED IN EPRHATH & I
BURIED HER THERE)
-------------------------------------------------------
A general rule states that when a noun is repeated
(instead of using a pronoun) it indicates that a
broader meaning of the noun is indicated -- Hence
the words involved dont just refer to the city but
rather to the city in its broader meaning (including
its outskirts)
- Finally note the use of the word THERE in Gn48-07
------------------------------------------------------
I buried here THERE on the ROAD to EPHRATH OUTSKIRTS
------------------------------------------------------
THERE seems to be an emphasis on the OUTSKIRTS vs the
city itself
