GOALS
=====
This module studies the ALIGNMENT method in Rashi. In this
method 2 different verses are found to be ALMOST the same.
The verses are lined up and the minor differences between
them function as footnotes illuminating the text.
TODAYS UNIT
===========
In todays module we align 2 descriptions of Gods
promise to Jacob. I am going to Israel next week
and hope to have the Grand summary on Alignment
up this week. I hope to email you from Israel daily

2 DESCRIPTIONS OF GODS PROMISE TO JACOB |
EXAMPLE 101: Gn28-20a ALIGNMENT of GOD IS WITH ME
EXAMPLE 102: Gn28-20b ALIGNMNET of I WILL WATCH YOU
EXAMPLE 103: Gn28-20c ALIGNMENT of I WILL FEED YOU
EXAMPLE 104: Gn28-21a ALIGNMENT of I WILL RETURN YOU HOME
EXAMPLE 105: Gn28-21c ALIGNMENT of I WILL BLESS CHILDREN
EXAMPLE 106: Gn28-22a Added Item: Dedication of Altar to God
BACKGROUND
----------
Gn28-15 contains a promise by God to the Patriarch Jacob.
The promise was made when Jacob made the perilous journey
to Laban. God therefore reassured him that He will be with him
Jacob repeats Gods promise to him in Gn28-20:22 (& adds something)
THE TEXT
--------
For example:
- Gn28-15 BEHOLD I GOD AM WITH YOU
- Gn28-20 IF GOD WILL BE WITH ME
The other phrases are treated similarly
THE RASHI
---------
Rashi is Simple and simply points out how the 5 phrases
in each set of verses ALIGN with each other. At times
this alignment is OBVIOUS while at other times it requires
clarification.
THE LIST
--------
Here is the LIST |
PROMISE BY GOD Gn28-15 | VOW OF JACOB Gn28-20:22 |
I(God) am WITH You | When God will be WITH me |
And I will WATCH you | And WATCH me |
& Will RETURN you home | And I will RETURN home *1 |
& won't DESERT you | And give me FOOD*2 |
Until the PROMISE is kept | And God will be MY LORD *3 |
| Then*4*5 I will build a house of God |
| |
COMMENTS |
*1 Actually Gn28-20:22 lists getting FOOD prior to RETURNING home
We have changed the order to show the correspondences
*2 Of course this assumes that
-------------------------------------------
DESERTING somebody = DEPRIVING THEM OF FOOD
-------------------------------------------
This equation is in fact proven by the following LIST
---------------------------------------------------------------
VERSE TEXT SHOWING THAT To Desert = To have no food
------------ --------------------------------------------------
Ex02-20 Why have you DESERTED the man, Call & feed him
Dt18-19:20 ..EAT before God with the Levite..don't DESERT him
Ps37-25 a righteous person DESERTED.....SEEKING FOOD
2Ch28-14:15 they DESERTED the captives..others came & FED THEM
Dt14-26:27 ..EAT before God & enjoy...do not DESERT the Levit
1Sam30-12:13 ..he not EATEN or DRINKEN..his master DESERTED HIM
---------------------------------------------------------------
*3 We have to show that the two ALIGNED phrases
- GOD IS MY LORD
- GOD KEEPS MY PROMISE TO ME
are equivalant. Let us proceed.
The full quote in Gods speech to Jacob is as follows
-------------------------------------------------------------
I will not desert you till I do AS I PROMISED(Gn28-15)
-------------------------------------------------------------
The phrase AS I PROMISED in turn refers to Gods promise
to Abraham
------------------------------------------------------------
I will be a Lord to you and your descendants (Gn17-07)
------------------------------------------------------------
Now that we have identified the PROMISE let us turn
to Jacobs formulation. Jacob said in his vow in Gn28-20:22
-------------------------------
And God will be my Lord
-------------------------------
The fulfillment of this vow explicitly occurs in
Gn35-02:04 (not brought down by Rashi)
-----------------------------------------------------------
And they (Jacobs household) removed their idols(Gn35-02:04)
-----------------------------------------------------------
Thus we see that the two phrases refer to the same thing
- Gods PROMISE to increase Jacobs CHILDREN
- Jacobs DESIRE to have God as LORD (For him & descendants)
And this was fulfilled by removal of idols from Jacobs
household
*4 The actual building of the altar and house of God is
mentioned in Gn35-01:14(Again this is not brought down
by Rashi)
*5 Notice how the ALIGNMENT explains the Rashi that interprets
the VAV on the last phrase as meaning THEN. For this
phrase is NEW in Jacobs citation of Gods promise. Hence,
Rashi concludes, that this new item is a CONSEQUENCE to
God fulfilling his promise.
