GOALS
=====
We present today the GRAND SUMMARY of the alignment method. I
hope you have enjoyed this method. Over 100 Rashis are summarized
below. The ALIGNMENT method focuses on 2 verses with almost
identical words; the minor differences justify inferences. There
are 4 main methods

RECORD LAYOUT
-------------
Here is a typical record
 --------------------------------------------------------------
Mthd Verse Topic Verse Text Post Ex

SAME Gn49-11b POETRY Tieing to [VINE|SRK] his donkey 1 1

Note that records are more than 65 characters. Hence this summary should
be read with wide margins.

To explain the record layout we analyze the above example

THE VERSE & VERSE TEXT Gn49-11
--------------------------------
Tieing his donkey to the VINE
tieing his donkey to the SORAYK

THE ALIGNMENT NOTATION
----------------------
Notice how the CAPPED words VINE and SORAYK align.
We can more compactly notate this using a vertical Bar method
 -------------------------------------
Tieing his donkey to the [VINE | SRK]
 -------------------------------------
THis notation indicates that the verse has 2 halves with VINE
aligning with SORAYK

THE METHOD (MTHD)
-----------------
THere are 4 main methods for interpreting ALIGNMENT. We use
her the SAME method. Under this method the two aligned words
are the same: That is: SORAYK is inferred to have the same
meaing as VINE.

THE TOPIC
---------
This is a POETRY verse. Many poetry verses use this alignment
method. The topic helps focus on commonality and usually
refers to the topic of the verse

THE POST & EX
--------------
Recall that this is a summary. This particular example comes
from EXAMPLE 1 in the posting ALIGN-1 which you can find on
the Rashi calendar at http://www.RashiYomi.Com/calendar.htm
You can also hyperlink to this posting from the HTML version
of this page. This allows further review of examples.

THE LISTS
---------
We first present an overview of the main methods of
ALIGNMENT with examples. We then present detailed lists
for each method.

THE 4 MAIN METHODS OF ALIGNMENT

We present here the 4 main methods of alignment with examples.
This is followed by 4 lists with over a 100 examples of
Mthd Verse Verse Text Point of Alignment
SAME Gn49-11b Tieing to [VINE|SRK] his donkey SRK = VINE *1
2 CASES Ex20-03a Dont [POSSESS|MAKE] idols*2 Dont OWN; Dont BUY
INFER Nu22-11b banish them [FROM MY VICINITY|*] BANISH=DESTROY*3
ADD-ON Ex29-13b Finger [ON|FROM|OF] Liver*4 finger+little liver
COMMENTS
*1 We conclude that the Hebrew root SRK has the SAME meaning as
   as word VINE

*2 Thus there are two distinct prohibitions

*3 Ordinarily if a person said BANISH THEM we might interpret this
to mean BANISH THEM FROM ME. We wouldnt be justified in being
   picky on words.

   - BANISH THEM FROM ME means just banish them
   - BANISH THEM ------- means destroy them.
It is the alignment that justifies this pickiness

*4 The law requires that we take the finger of the liver with
a little bit of liver on it. We infer this from the 3
   prepositions ON FROM OF
--ON THE LIVER implies that the finger should have a little
liver added to it from the place where finger & liver meet
--FROM THE LIVER implies that no extra liver should be taken

*5 There are 6 extra methods which are summarized
in a 5th list. Most of these methods are other Rashi methods
or else they are very rare methods. It would appear from their
rareness that these inferences are peculiar and non-standard.
ALIGNMENTS INDICATING sameness OF MEANING

In the examples below the two aligned words are assumed to have
the same meaning.

SAME Dt32-21b IDOLATRY They offer to [NO-gODS|gODS not known]*11 53 123
COMMENTS
*1 Thus SRK means vine

*2 THus BLOOD refers to the BLOOD OF THE ENEMY

*3 Thus FLESH refers to the ENEMY HEADS

*4 We infer that RAAH, AYAH, DAYA are all the same
bird. Rashi identifies 3 methods of linguistis change

*5 We infer that SHAVUOTH is the holiday of 1st FRUITS

*6 RAAMSAYTH & RAMESAYTH are the same city
The name was changed when Pharoh made it an
industrial center (it used to be an agricultrual center)

*7 Nu28 and Nu15 both speak about the libations.
The libations consist of WINE, FLOUR & OIL.
e.g. We have 1 TENTH of flour for a lamb, 2 TENTHS
for a RAM etc. The numbers in these 2 chapters are the same
Where measurements are missing they are assumed transferred

*8 Rashi combines together the nuances of JEALOUS & ANGRY
Simliarly Rashi combines STRANGE & DISGUSTING

*9 In some of these verses it says God will punish THEM while
in other verses the word THEM is absent. Rashi using
alignment simply transfers the word THEM to all the verses
(Or in some cases the word THEIR: Eg The fire ate [THEIR]
    land)

*10 The verse says the same thing twice: YOU FORGOT THE GOD
WHO GAVE BIRTH TO YOU: YOU NEGLECTED THE ROCK WHO HOLLOWED
YOU. Alignment justifies inferring that the 2 verse halves
mean the same thing (HOLLOW means to give birth because
gestation takes place in the hollow of the womb)

*11 NO_gODS refer to gods used for purposes other than power
(like the god of love). gODS THAT ARE NOT KNOWN refer to
    non-mainstream gods.
ALIGNMENTS INDICATING 2 CASES

The alignments below clearly indicate 2 cases. e.g.
Lv20-05a says I God will CUT OFF HIM (The worshipper of MOLECH)
Lv20-05a says I God will PLACE MY FACE AGAINST HIS FAMILY

Rashi explains that the family is punished for not protesting
the molech worshippers act (of burning children). Notice
how
- the family has a lesser sin than the actual worshipper
- their punishment (PLACE FACE) is less severe than CUT OFF

COMMENTS
*1 There are two prohibition
   -- Dont make idols
-- Dont buy them (dont possess them)

*2 Here are the punishments
-- the molech worshipper(burns his son) is CUT OFF
-- the worshippers family has GODS FACE against them
      (because they should have protested)

*3 Here are the rules (Explicitly said)
-- One blast is a signal for all elders to congregate
-- two blasts is a signal for all people to congregate
-- a stacatto blast is a signal for the nation to journey

*4 Dt32-05 reads DID THE JEWISH SIN HURT GOD? NO!
THE JEWISH SIN HURT THE JEWS

*5 In Nu28 if it says bring sacrifices for this holiday
BESIDES these other sacrifices we infer that 2 sets
of sacrifices were brought (eg On Sabbath both the
daily and Sabbath sacrifices were brought)

Similarly on Succoth it says bring this number on day 2
and this number on day 3 while on Passover it says bring
this number all 7 days (Thus the passover numbers are
constant while the Succoth numbers vary)

*7 The Priest right to eat foods is a function of purity
-- Sacrifices are only eaten by males in full purity
-- Certain priestly gifts may be eaten by both genders
-- certain gifts may be eaten in several places(not just holy)

*8 Throughout the temple construction it says to make it as
SHOWN. By the Candellabrah it says to make it as IS BEING
SHOWED. The inference is that Moses had to be shown the
Candellabrah construction a second time because its
construction was the most delicate in the whole temple

*9 Sacrifice blood is never eaten. Animal sacrifice
is not eaten for ELEVATION offerings but is eaten
    for PEACE offerings.

*10 ANIMALS are SACRIFICED
    FLOUR OFFERINGS are OFFERED
WINE LIBATIONS are LIBATED (Poured on altar)

*11 Both the sacrifices and libations must be unblemished
ALIGNMENTS REQUIRING inference of nuances

The list below presents alignments where the differences require
studying nuances. For example one verse says DONT SWEAR FALSELY
while another verse says DONT SWEAR FOR NOUGHT. I might take
these phrases (FALSELY, FOR NOUGHT) as meaning the same principle
BUt because of the ALIGNMENT principle I extract nuances
-- I shouldnt swear FALSELY (eg saying a tree is stone)
-- I shouldnt swear FOR NOUGHT (eg saying a tree is a tree)

The justification for this interpretation comes from the ALIGNMENT

COMMENTS
*1 -If you curse Gods actual name there is a death penalty
-If you just curse God but dont use his actual name
punishment is at the hands of heaven

*2 The verse lists all Boolean possibilities of incest/adultery
-- adultery + incest: eg Fathers wife who is mother
-- adultery (no incest): eg Fathers 2nd wife
-- no adultery: incest: eg Mother after fathers death
-- no adultery incest: eg fathers 2nd wife after his death

*3 The Bible lists 4 sons on Passover
-- apathetic: Doesnt want to ask questions
-- simple : Simply asks WHAT IS THIS
-- WISE: Asks with details: What are the laws etc
-- WICKED: Asks cynically: What is this to you?

*4 You are responsible for damage to animals whether
-- you kill the animal(its soul)
-- you wound the animal(you hit it)

*5 Various prohibitions of false oaths are inferred from
   the aligned verses:
-- swearing that a tree is a tree (Swear for nought)
-- swearing that a tree is gold (Swear falsely)
   -- swearing with Gods name
-- swearing without Gods full name
-- swearing in slang dialects(e.g. I snear it is so)

*6 Rashi compares two droughts
-- in one the concern is water for animals
-- in the second the concern is water for people
   (This was more severe)

*7 There are three main trumpet blast rhtyms
-- blast a blast (Long sound)
-- stacatto a stacatto (Machine gun like sound)
-- blast a stacatto: Long sound: Stacatto sound: Long sound

*8 From the two verses on intermarriage we infer that
-- if the mother is Jewish the child is Jewish
-- if the mother is nonJewish the child is NonJewish

*9 Rashi compares two wars: By OG, God said DONT FEAR HIM
while by SiCHON this phrase is absent. But both kings were
equally powerful. Rashi infers that OG had special merits
(he had done Jews favors) and Moses was worried this would
   protect him

*10 The BIble discusses requirements in murder weapons (For
their to be a death penalty)
-- a stone is only lethal if it is big enough (that is if
you fill by throwing a pebble there is no death penalty)
-- a needle can kill even if it is tiny
(This is inferred from the aligned phrases IRON UTENSIL
vs HAND STONE) Other inferences are also made

*11 There are about a dozen commandments that only apply ONCE
the JEWS COME TO ISRAEL. Most of these commandments begin
WHEN YOU COME TO THE LAND & INHERIT & CONQUER IT. One
commandment however begins IN COMING TO THE LAND.. The
different language implies that this commandment only applies
when you COME IN (even before conquest)

*12 A variety of phrases indicate payment requirements for damage
-- if you money then pay the damages
-- you can also pay in movable items of the same worth
-- as a last resort you can pay in real estate

*13 Bilam the King of Moab requested that Balak, a non jewish
prophet curse the Jews. Balak repeats Bilams request to God
There are about 10 differences between Bilams original
request and Balaks repetition. The underlying reasons are that
-- Bilam asked diplomatically (& hence used words like PLEASE)
-- Balak asked in a vulgar manner in hatred

-- Bilam thought the Jews a military threat;he wanted AVOIDANCE
-- Balak hated the Jews; he wanted DESTRUCTION

*14 It says that women should not wear MALE UTENSILS and men
should not wear FEMALE GARMENTS. Hence the prohibitions of
opposite gender wearings applies to dress, jewelry, army
    clothes, etc

*15 Until Abraham came God was known only to Angels. Abraham
tried to unify the world for both angels & people. Hence
by Abraham we find the phrase the God of HEAVEN & EARTH

*16 The phrase FILLED THE BUCKET & LEFT vs the phrase DREW WATER
denotes a successful bucket filling (by a well with much
    water)

*17 Both Esauv and Jacob made food for Isaac & asked him to
bless them. From the different phrases used we see different
    personality types
-- Jacob said please, emphasized his person,
       & tried to please father
-- Esauv didnt say please; emphasized his
birthright & tried to obtain blessings

*18 Only one of the 70 children in Gn46 has his mother mentioned
Since Jacob prohibited marriage iwth Canaanites we assume
this was Dina, who was raped by a Canaanite. So this is
    Dinah child from that rape.

*19 There are several accounts of Rachels burial. From
the various nuances we learn that
-- Jacob was personally ordered to bury her where he did
-- he buried her on the outskirts of Ephrath
-- about a mile from the city(Later the city expanded)
Rashi suggests a reason for the prophetic order: So that
Jews could pray on the roadside and identify with Rachel
who was the Matriarch of Troubles.

*20 A variety of verses indicate that the Jews inherited
ten, seven, six, three lands. Here is the resolution
    - we get 10 lands in King Messiahs time
    - we were promised 7 lands in Moses time
    - 1 nation fled to Africa; we only had to conquer 6 nations
    - 3 nations were conquered by the Tzirah fly
    - 5 of these nations came from the powerful Canaan clan

*21 Some commandments use the word HIS. e.g.
-- if you HIT someone lethally you get the death penalty

Thus the punishment is independent of whether you hit
       a friend foe or relative

-- if you HIT YOUR father you get the death penalty

Thus the punishment is dependent on whether you do it
to YOUR father (but there is no death penalty if you
do it to someone elses father)

ALIGNMENTS JUSTIFYING ADDING attributes

In this list we illustrate ALIGNMENTS where the multiple verses suggest
adding further requirements to the law. This list is most typical of
Rashi inferences that appear stretched. Perhaps the clearest example
are the multiple verses on kidnapping. One verse says KIDNAP while
another verse says ABUSE while another verse says SELL etc. The law
therefore requires all these acts (Kidnapping, possessing, abuse
and sale) before a death penalty is administered.

COMMENTS
*1 You take the finger & add a little bit of liver where the finger
and liver meet (Fulfilling ON, FROM and OF)

*2 Different verses on HUMAN KIDNAPPING expose 4 necessary attributes
   - kidnapping
   - taking him to your possession
   - abusing victim
   - selling him
These 4 acts are necessary before the kidnapper receives a death penalty

*3 The Biblical phrase used is the same phrase used in Blessings.
It is therefore conjectured that Abraham in his outreach efforts
introduced the idea of BLESSING GOD before eating (The Blessing
formula is BLessed are you God, LORD KING OF THE WORLD; the
last few capped words is the extra phrase occuring in this verse)

*4 From the numerous extra phrases we infer cross examination procedures
-- you ask WHAT was the crime
   -- when did it take place(decade,year,month,day, weekday,hour)
-- WHERE did it take place
You also ask numerous superficial questions (eg color of clothing)
to test the consistency of the two witnesses

*6 All names in Nu26 begin with the letter HAY. By suffixing the
letter YUD to the name we have the name surrounded by the
name of GOD (YUD HAY). ONly one of the 60 names does not
need a YUD added because it already begins with a YUD and
ends with a HAY (YIMNAH) This explains why this name was not
   changed

*7 From numerous verses we infer 4 types of idol worship
   -- worship of stones
   -- worship of animals/fish/birds
   -- worship of stars
-- worship of angels (as intermediaries to God)
All of these are idol worship

COMMENTS
*1 This is an alignment where the order is different.
-Gad said they would protect their SHEEP & FAMILY
-MOses requested protection of their FAMILY & SHEEP

The different orders reflect what they considered most
important (Gad emphasized business while Moses emphasized
    Family)

*2 This is an alignment where the order is different.
Both parties said BLESS BE THOSE WHO BLESS YOU & CURSED
BE THOSE WHO CURSE YOU. Hoever Isaac who suffered alot
began with the CURSES while BIlam who had an initial
    cheerful life began with BLESSINGS.

*3 These usages of alignment are very rare and appear to go
against the rules used most of the time. Therefore this
example require further examination. Here are some details

The talmud deals with this alignment by saying that anyone
who curses a widow violates 2 separate laws.

This is the only example where an alignment is used to
infer a violation of 2 prohibitions.

*4 These examples should more properly be classified under the
Rabbi Ishmael method of contradictory verses. For example
one verse says DONT CURSE A DEAF MUTE while another verse
says DONT CURSE A KING. We resolve the apparent contradiction
by using the Rabbi Ishmael method of generalization: We arent
allowed to curse anyone alive (Deaf mute to King). There is
no (Biblical prohibition ) against cursing the dead. For
more details on Rabbi Ishmaels method of contradictory verses
   see http://www.RashiYomi.Com/ri-14.htm

*5 These examples use the method of DOUBLE PARSHAS. This method
focuses on two Biblical sentences, chapters with a similar
theme. In the double parshah method the two paragraphs are
not ALMOST IDENTICAL while in the ALIGNMENT method the 2 verses
are almost identical. We will therefore defer explanation of
these verses to when we deal with DOUBLE PARSHAS

*6 The inference here is based on REPETITION Of an identical
   verse rather than an alignment.
