Although there are 40 Rashis there are 4 simple rules. RULE: The Hebrew word "ALL"(KL)indicates that there are no exceptions and that what is being discussed should take place in ALL circumstances---EVEN those you wouldn't ordinarily think of.There are 4 methods by which the interpretation of ALL is implemented. ALL can indicate (A) cases you wouldn't ordinarily think of -------------------------------------- EXAMPLE:Gn06-12a "ALL Flesh corrupted" RASHI: EVEN Animals corrupted (B) it can indicate that there are no exceptions ----------------------------------------------- EXAMPLE:By the 10 commandments it describes how the Jewish people all witnessed the miracles Ex19-11c "The WHOLE nation saw the thunders" RASHI: The "WHOLE" nation--there were no exceptions (C) it can refer to the parts of a whole (D) it can emphasize not to exclude "obvious exceptions" In this issue we begin the Rashis where >"WHOLE" means "NO EXCEPTIONS" *1 #*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 2000 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# EXAMPLE 17: Dt01-01b -------------------- When Moses was about to Die he made a farewell address >Dt01-01b "These are the things that Moses spoke to ALL the Jews >RASHI: "ALL" the Jews--no one missed this speech. (Moses knew people...if some people were not at the speech then they could say afterwards 'if I was there I would have answered them') EXAMPLE 18: Gn33-11d -------------------- When Jacob met Esau, Jacob begged Esauv to take his presents. Esauv refused so Jacob said 'Please take them since God was kind to me and.." >Gn33-11d 'God gave me ALL' RASHI: I am not missing anything*1 -------------------------NOTES---------------------------------- *1 In other words 'there are no EXCEPTIONS to what I have'. Rashi further uses alignment to contrast what Jacob and Esauv said about their state ---Jacob 'I have ALL' = no exceptions = nothing missing ---Esauv 'I have ALOT' = more than enough So Esauv was arrogant (I have more than enough) while Jacob simply said he had his means. #*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 2000 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*
