Subject: Re: Vav HaHipuch

Michael Kelmer in Bais Medrash Vol 1 Number 82 asks about VV HaHipuch. Here
is the rule:

* Ordinary past = Past perfect = He HAD done it
* VAV + Future = Perfect.

The most famous 2 examples are

Gen 4:1 - And Adam HAD ALREADY known his wife, who became pregnant and gave
birth to Kayin"

RASHI: "HAD ALREADY KNOWN"---She gave birth BEFORE the GAN EDEN expulsion
story (Kayin was born in Gan Eden and Hebel after the expulsion).

Gen 25:34 - And Jacob had already given to Esauv bread and he(Esauv) ate
and drank got up and walked out and despised being the elder

(Thus Jacob had given Esauv food immediately when he came in hungry; they
then discussed the FIRST BORNSHIP and after that he left).
