Bulleting in the Bible |
EXAMPLE 8: Ex18-10a BULLET: PHAROH was a harsh KING
EXAMPLE 9: Ex18-10b BULLET: EGYPT was a harsh NATION
BACKGROUND
----------
When you type in English you can use a variety of TYPING EFFECTS
such as
- indentation
- paragraphing
- bold, italics, underline
- bullets
- tables
These techniques were not DIRECTLY available to the Biblical
Author. However they were used in the Bible. One of Rashis 6 main
tasks was to indicate how the Bible implemented TYPING EFFECTS.
We show one example in this background section and then present
different examples every day.
THE TEXT-Gn26-12
----------------
And Isaac sowed and produced in
- THAT land
- THAT year
100 fold.
THE RULE
---------
The Bible indicates BULLETS by using REPEATING KEYWORDS. The
effect of these BULLETS is to place emphasis on EACH item. The
examples will clarify
THE RASHI
---------
The verse places an emphasis on BOTH the LAND and the YEAR. This
indicates that there were 2 aspects to the miracle
-- it was a bad year for growth(eg a famine year) but Isaac
sowed 100 fold
-- it was a bad land for growth(eg other lands like Israel
had more fertile land), but nevertheless Isaac sowed
100 fold
THE LIST:TODAYS EXAMPLE Ex18-10

The verse, Ex18-01 with its bulleted structure is depicted below
For clarity the verse is repeated a second time with an asterisk

COMMENTS |
*1 Without the bullet the focus of the sentence would be that
Jethro praised God for saving the Jews from Pharohs Egypt
However the repeated keyword creates a bullet effect
which creates an emphasis. It points to 2 aspects of
the salvation
-- God saved us from a harsh KING (PHAROH)
-- God saved us from a harsh NATION (EGYPT)
