The basic technique for >REPEATED WORDS< was succinctly formulated by the MALBIM -------------------------------------------------------- When a word is >REPEATED< unnecessarily then the sentence with that word refers to >NON-STANDARD NUANCES< The examples will illustrate how this is implemented -------------------------------------------------------- TODAYS UNIT =========== In todays unit we show two examples where the REPETITION refers to non-standard examples by including BORDER LINE cases. In these cases the REPEATED WORD could also be translated as >EVEN IN THIS CASE< REFERENCE: ========= Material in this module comes from a variety of postings. Please check the following items which might be a bit more lengthy. http://www.RashiYomi.Com/h2n19.htm http://www.RashiYomi.Com/h4n5.htm http://www.RashiYomi.Com/dn.htm #*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 2000 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#* EXAMPLE 9: Gn26-13a ========= BACKGROUND ---------- The Bible is discussing the how the Patriarch Isaac prospered. THE VERSE --------- --------------------------- And the man(Isaac) >GREW< and he continued to >GROW< until he had >GROWN< alot And he acquired sheep-acquisitions and cattle-acquisitions and many possesions --------------------------- THE RASHI --------- If the verse just said >And the man GREW< I would simply identify this growth with what is listed: >Sheep, cattle & possesions<. When the verse uses the REPEATED PHRASE >And the man GREW...continued to GROW...till he had GROWN< I infer non-standard nuances of >GROWTH<: Isaac grew in standard growth items like cattle and sheep and Isaac also grew in non-standard growth items---Rashi gives a nifty example--even Isaacs manure was coveted as >the best< EXAMPLE 10: Nu17-28a ========== BACKGROUND ---------- The Bible is discussing the law that any layman (non levite or non priest) who enters the temple is punished VERSE ----- >All who come NEAR NEAR to the temple will be punished< RASHI ----- If the verse just said >All who come NEAR to the temple will be punished< I would say that this refers to someone who brazenly walks into the temple. By using the REPETITION FORM >All who come NEAR NEAR will be punished< I infer that the punishment of extinction applies even if there was partial negligence as happens when it is eg crowded in the outer court where Non-Levite-Priests may enter and because of the crowding someone half-accidentally went in. #*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 2000 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*
