The basic technique for >REPEATED WORDS< was succinctly formulated by the MALBIM -------------------------------------------------------- When a word is >REPEATED< unnecessarily then the sentence with that word refers to >NON-STANDARD NUANCES< The examples will illustrate how this is implemented -------------------------------------------------------- TODAYS UNIT =========== Just as I was about to write the Grand Summary I realized I had left out about a dozen Rashis on REPETITION. Todays unit deals with --------------------------------------------------------------- >REPETITION< is a style of endearment. When something is close to you you >REPEAT< it or review it frequently. This is most clearly stated in Song-of-Songs-Rabbah on Songs 4:1 >You are BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL baby<; the >REPETITION< that lovers use indicates a sense of closeness (NOTE: >endearment< is consistent with our original explanation of >repetition< as indicating >non-standard nuances< since >endearment< is something special and >non-standard< --------------------------------------------------------------- REFERENCE: ========= A more detailed but wordier version of todays module may be found at the following URL http://www.RashiYomi.Com/h1n6.htm #*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 2000 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#* EXAMPLE 16: Gn22-11a =========== BACKGROUND ---------- The Bible is discussing how Abraham was following Gods orders to sacrifice his son--the so called test of the Isaac THE VERSE --------- Gn22-11 >And God called to Abraham & said ABRAHAM ABRAHAM< RASHI ----- The >REPEATED WORD< >ABRAHAM ABRAHAM< is a style of endearment. People who are close to one another will sometimes repeat names when addressing each other. (By contrast when being formal people are usually terse). EXAMPLE 17: Gn46-02a =========== BACKGROUND ---------- The Bible is discussing how Jacob was leaving Israel and going down to Egypt. THE VERSE --------- Gn46-02 >And God called to Jacob & said JACOB JACOB< RASHI ----- The >REPEATED WORD< >JACOB JACOB< is a style of endearment. People who are close to one another will sometimes repeat names when addressing each other. (By contrast when being formal people are usually terse). EXAMPLE 18: Ex01-01a ========== THE VERSE --------- The first paragraph of Ex01 lists the 12 tribes, the descendants of Jacob, that came down to Egypt. THE REPETITION -------------- But these 12 tribes are also discussed in Gn46-08:27 and in more detail RASHI ----- The >REPETITION< of the tribes is a style of endearment. When something is close to you you >REPEAT< it or review it frequently. EXAMPLE 19: Nu08-19a ========== THE VERSE --------- ---------------------------------------------------------------- & I have given the Levites, given to Aaron and his son, from >THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL< to perform the temple service of >THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL< in the Temple and to atone on >THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL< and >THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL< will not have any punishment when >THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL< come near to the temple ---------------------------------------------------------------- THE REPETITION -------------- The phrase >THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL< is repeated 5 times in this verse (It could have used pronouns eg >When THEY come near the temple<). The >REPETITION< is a style of endearment. When something is close to you you >REPEAT< it or review it frequently. COMMENT ------- Rashi also adds the following >The phrase is repeated exactly 5 times corresponding to the 5 books of the Bible which the Jews kept and received< But our approach to such Rashis is the following: * Rashi >was< explaining >why< the Jews were dear to God They were dear to God because they followed the Torah * Rashi >was not< explaining why the phrase was repeated 5 times. Rather the >FIVENESS< of repetition and the >FIVENESS< of the books of the BIble is just a clever coincidence to help remember the grammatical point that >REPETITION< is a vehicle to show endearment. We have explained other Rashis using numerical coincidences the same way. #*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 2000 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*
