Verse Dt04-47a states
And they possessed his land, and the land of Og king of Bashan,
two kings of the Amorites,
who were on the side of the Jordan eastward;
Rashi interprets the underlined phrase,
eastward
diagramatically,
The Jordan river goes from the North East
to the south west. Hence it naturally divides
Israel into east and west. The Bashan
and Emorite territories were on the east.
