VERSE: Dt11-16b
=============== TORAH TEACHES HOW IT HAPPENS: APOSTASY ==========
BACKGROUND
----------
The Torah in Dt11 warns us against defection.
THE TEXT
--------
The text is developmental. It doesnt just say DONT DEFECT
But rather, it builds up its case: If you EAT WELL, you
may DEFECT, DEPART from the TORAH, and WORSHIP IDOLS!!?!
THE RASHI
---------
Rashi explains that the Torah uses here the prinicple of
DEVELOPMENTAL CLIMAX: According to this principle the Torah
will sometimes outline the STAGES by which something
happens. This is very useful to those who deal with
OUTREACH since each STAGE is itemized. Other examples
of climax may be found in the references*1
Here is the LIST. Let us see how Rashi analyzes APOSTASY
=================================================================
VERSE STAGE # TEXT BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF STAGE
======= ======== ======== ===================================
Dt11-15 Stage 1 EAT WELL Person has all needs satisfied
Dt11-16 Stage 2 Tempted Person is exposed to outside forces
Dt11-16 Stage 3 Avoid Torah Cause youre involved in temptation
Dt11-17 Stage 4 Other gods Without the Torah,you defect*2
NOTES
=====
*1 See http://www.RashiYomi.Com/example8.htm
*2 The point is that when SATIEATED it is normal to be
exposed to other TEMPATATIONS: When exposed to other
tempatations it is normal to EXPERIMENT now and then--
and this involves SKIPPING LEARNING and SYNOGOGUE
occasionally; finally when one skips LEARNING
occasionally there is potential to be exposed to
other RELIGIONS.
