VERSE: Dt32-05d

RASHIS COVERED: Dt32-05d Dt32-05e

====================== IKAYSH=CROOKED =======================

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
One of Rashis 6 main goals is to explain meaning the same
way a dictionary does. There are many methods of explaining
meanings of words -- for example Rashi can explain the
meaning of an UNKNOWN word, or explain the meaning of a
PHRASE. However in Dt32-05d Rashi explains a DERIVED
METAPHORIC meaning of a known word. IKAYSH refers to a
CROOKED ROAD. Rashi explains that IKAYSH can also refer
to a CROOK (a bad person). Note how English reflects this
analogy also (CROOK is a CROOKED PERSON). The list below
confirms this analogy of PHYSICAL-MORAL crookedness

TODAYS LISTS
------------
We present two lists: The first list displays words that
can simultaneously refer to PHYSICAL and MORAL crookedness
The second lists examines the phenomenon of doubling root
letters as occurs in the word P-Th-L-T-L (notice how the
Th-L is repeated).
=============================================================
VERSE 1 WORD MORAL MEANING VERSE 2 PHYSICAL MEANING
======== ======== ================ ======== =================
Dt32-05d IKaysh Crooked person Mic03-09 Crooked (Road)
Dt32-05e PSaltol  Machinations     Ex39-31  Twined rope*1
Est01-16 A-V-H    Sin/double cross Ecc01-15 Unfixable twist
1Ch13-04 Y-Sh-R   Proper           Is40-04  Straight path
Gn27-36  A-K-V    Double cross*10  Is40-04  Crooked path*10

NOTES
-----
*1 In a separate list we will examine the grammatical
   implications of the doubled root letters:P-T-L-T-L

------------------------ LONGER FOOTNOTES -------------------

*10 DOUBLE CROSS and CROOKED are traditional interpretations
   A closer analysis shows that A-K-V means the
   SECONDARY PATH(not the CROOKED path) Thus we have

   ---------------------------------------------
   Is40-04 The SIDEPATHS will become main roads
   ---------------------------------------------

   Gn27-36 which has a nuance of DOUBLE CROSS could
   be translated either as
   -------------------------------------------------
   Gn27-36 He SECOND-HANDED me
   Gn27-36 He showed me all these SECONDARY CLAUSES
   -------------------------------------------------

   Dt07-12 would be translated as

   -------------------------------------------------
   Dt07-12 When you FULLY observe these commandments
           (Including all SECONDARY clauses)

==================== DOUBLED ROOT LETTERS =================

In this list repeated from Volume 1 Number 23 we show
how REPEATING ROOT LETTERS in a word denotes intensity.
Thus for example Y-F-H means PRETTY. Y-F-H-F-H means
VERY PRETTY. For further details as well as the harmonizing
of Ibn Ezra with Chazal see
http://www.Rashiyomi.com/h1n23.htm
==============================================================
ROOT ROOT MEANING VERSE MEANING WHEN ROOT DOUBLED
===== ================ ========= =============================
ShChR Beginning Dawn Songs1-6 Ending Dawn *1
SChR  Give-take motion Ps38-11   Revolving
SGH Grow Isa17-01 Wild intense growth
YFH   Pretty           Ps45-03   Very Pretty
TLL Lump Song5-11 Braided hair (many lumps!)
CDD Sparks Isa54-12 Sparkling stone (like a sun)
COL   Measure          Gn16-12   Subsidize, Support
CRH   Dig              2S6-14    Dance*2
TzNH Cold Ex16-33 Thermos (Preserves cold)*3
PThL  Thread           Dt32-05   Heavily Intertwined

NOTES:
-----
*1 As indicated the Ibn Ezra takes SChR = Black and
   SChRChReTH = TAN, a weakened black. However by
   approaching this verse as DAWN and ENDING DAWN
   we preserve the idea that doubling
   root letters denotes INTENSITY.

*2 Note that it is the MOTIONS of Dancing that are
   INTENSE forms of the MOTIONS of digging. Digging
   and Dancing of course have nothing to do with each
   other. One of the challenging things in research on
   meaning is how a whole assortment of principles may
   coalesce on a single word.

*3 A thermos is a doubly insulated can that preserves
   cold (hence the doubling of TzN). In light of the
   principle we mention here we would say that TzNH just
   means cold while TzNTzNeTH means INTENSELY PRESERVING
   COLD (ie a THERMOS)since most coldness go away.
