VERSE: Ex02-12b


RULE: How do you indicate that something you were looking
for could not be found?

RULE: In Hebrew you use the phrase "..I looked & BEHOLD THERE
WAS NONE" In other words the keywords "behold" and "none"
must be there. (See the examples below)

APPLICATION:

In Ex02-12 it does not say "& he looked at the person hitting
the Jew and BEHOLD THERE WAS NO ONE SEEING HIM and so Moses
hit him and killed him"

Rather it says "& he looked and (prophetically) saw no one
(righteous connected with this person) and Moses smote
him and killed him"

In other words it is the absence of the phrase "BEHOLD ..NONE"
that motivates us to reinterpret SAW as PROPHETICALLY SAW.*1*2





EXAMPLES(Showing that the keyword phrase BEHOLD NONE is needed)

(4) 1Sam14-17,And they counted &BEHOLD (HNH) Johnathan not There(AYN)
(5) 2King7-5, They came there & BEHOLD (HNH) No one was there(AYN)



NOTES

*1 The Hebrew verb R-A-H has a dozen meanings one of which
is TO PROPHESY. Note that the main reason we use this
secondary interpetation of R-A-H is because of the violation
of the stylistic rule mentioned above


*2 The sister Rashi Ex02-14d, "Moses killed him by the Divine
name" doesn't necessarily mean that Moses uttered the Divine
name to kill him--rather it means that "Moses physically killed
him BECAUSE of the prophecy of noone righteous descending from
him which Moses prophetically saw by the Divine name"

(There are 2 opinions in the Midrash Rabbah--he SMOTE him or
he UTTERED the Divine name...either one is possibly correct
Our point is that these opinions both go back to Ex02-12d
that Moses SAW the Egyptian prophetically and knew about him)
