========================== Ex15-08f ============================

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis 10 main methods is the explanation of meaning
the same way a dictionary explains meaning. We call this
the WORD MEANING method.

----------------------------------------------
Rashi had 10 vehicles to explain meaning. The SYNONYM
submethod takes words with known meanings and shows the
similarity and nuances in each term.
----------------------------------------------

Example 1: Ex15-08f
-------------------
Ex15-08f, describing the miracle by the Red Sea
states
---------------------------------
The waters CONGEALED over the sinking people
in the midst of the sea
---------------------------------

Here Rashi distinguishes between CONGEALED
and HARDENED. The word CONGEALED is more
picturesque. Rashi derives this nuance
from Job10-06 which speaks about the CONGEALING
of CREAM

Example 2: Ex15-10a
-------------------
Ex15-10a describing God's destruction of
the Egyptians at the Red Sea states
-----------------------------------
You BREEZED a wind and the sea covered them
-----------------------------------

Here Rashi distinguishes between BREEZE and WIND
The fact that God just BREEZED the mightiest Army
in the world pokes fun at Egyptian might!

Example 3: Ex15-16a
-------------------
Ex15-16a speaking about the fear the Egyptians
had of God states
-------------------------------------
May ANXIETY and FEAR fall upon them
-------------------------------------

Here Rashi distinguishes the nuances of ANXIETY
vs FEAR
------------------------------------
ANXIETY for FAR AWAY [danger]; FEAR
for IMMINENT danger
------------------------------------

Note: Some Rashi-ists may see FAR and NEAR
as referring to the people who were afraid.
I however have interpreted them to refer to
the proximity of danger.

Example 4,5,6: Ex21-25a Ex21-25b Ex21-25c
-----------------------------------------
Ex21-25 speaking about Monetary obligation
for damages distinguishes three types of wounds
- BURNS
- CUTS
- INFLAMMATIONS
For ANY wound damages must be paid

Further analysis of these SYNONYMS can be made
For example: The root X-B-R refers to FRIENDSHIP
and SEWING and hence its noun form refers to a
PATCH (Sewn on). But an INFLAMMATION "looks like"
a PATCH! Here an item is named by its APPEARANCE.

Example 7: Ex21-35a
-------------------
Ex21-35a discusses damages from a Goring ox
---------------------------------------------
If an Ox ATTACK another ox ...payment...
---------------------------------------------

Rashi distinguishes between GORE and ATTACK. The
word ATTACK connotes attack with any organ (horns,
feets etc).

Example 8,9: Ex22-26a Ex22-26b
-------------------------------
Ex22-26 discusses the Biblical requirement
of returning a garment deposit for a loan
-------------------------------------------
...you must return the garment nightly...
how else shall the borrower sleep....
-------------------------------------------
Rashi distinguishes several words for GARMENT
in the verse
- Garment
- Poncho
In other words, whether the lender took as a deposit
a DISTINGUISHED or SLIP-ON garment, it must be
returned.

Example 10,11: Ex22-20a, Ex22-20b
---------------------------------
Ex22-20 discussing the prohibition of
causing emotional anguish to a convert states
---------------------------------------------
A convert: Don't TEASE or SHOVE him
---------------------------------------------

- TEASE can mean VERBALLY TEASE
- TEASE can mean MONETARILY TEASE (a little
  extra overcharge)

- SHOVE can mean PHYSICALLY SHOVE
- SHOVE can mean ECONOMICALLY SHOVE (eg
Shove him out of his property)

Rashi observes
----------------------------------
The Torah prohibits both VERBAL and
MONETARY attacks on the convert
----------------------------------

NOTES
-----
*1 Rashi does not indicate how he knows that the
cutoff point for ram vs sheep is 2 years.
   - Perhaps this is general knowledge which shepards
know (That maturation takes places at two)
   - Supportive verses show that a one year old
is still considered a sheep (Eg Ex12-05)

*2 Also Lv07-34a See LIST955p for an analysis
of verses with WAIVE vs OSCILLATE

*3 Cf. 1S15-03 where the explicit order to totally
   exterminate Amalayk was given

*4 There are many words for conquer: CONQUEST, SUBDUE,
SMITE, WAR, etc. Our point here is to emphasize that
   ERASE means REMOVE ALL MEMORY.

*5 Cf. The English metaphor "No strings attached."

*6 The idea that TAKER OF WOMAN=ENGAGED while
GROOMS=ALREADY MARRIED fits into the following verses,
   Gn20-02:04
   --------------------------------------------------
   And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister;
and Abimelech king of Gerar sent, and became
ENGAGED to [litrally: TOOK] Sarah. But God came to
Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him,
Behold, you are but a dead man, because of the
woman whom you have taken; for she is a man’s wife.
   But Abimelech had not CONSUMATED the marriage;
   and he protested, ....
