------------------------------------------------------------
VERSE: Ex18-01b
RULE: The same person can frequently have MANY NAMES
EXAMPLES:
--------
(1) AVRAM Gn17-5 was renamed AVRAHAM
(2) SARAY Gn17-15 was renamed SARA(H)
(3) HShYaH Nu03-16 was renamed YeHoShuAh
(4) YTR Ex04-18;Ex18-1 was renamed YTHRO
NOTES:
-----
Rashi lists further names for Yithro--he seems to have had
between 4-7 names (Rashi does NOT cite the whole Sifra
leading us to suspect that he only agreed that Yitrho had
MANY names but not necessarily 7)
Yithro DEFINITELY had the following names
(4a) Ex04-18 YETER, Moses' father-in-law
(4b) Ex18-01 YTRO,..Moses' father-in-law
The name ChVV was definitely a name of Yithro
The name RUEL could refer to Yithro OR his father. Compare
(4c)Nu10-29 ChVV,son of RUEL,Moses' father in law
(4d)Ex02-18 ...to RUEL their father(refering to Yethro's daughters)
The following verses show that
(4e) KAYNI definitely was a name of Yithro.(Ju01-16)
(4f) CHVR (meaning FRIEND) could refer to YITHRO himself or else
to an organizaton, "The friends of Kayni", which he founded to
get people to worhsip God(Cf Ju04-11 vs Ju04-17)
Finally the enigmatic name PUTIEL (from E-L, God)
may refer to God.
(4g)Ex06-25(Putiel) could refer to JETHRO (Who served God) or
it could refer to Joseph (Who served God despite temptation
(or it could refer to both of them).
In conclusion Yethro had between 4-7 names.
